Muffling n deepening drums with old drumskins

Well i realised my school had a 'new' way of muffling n deepening the floor tom, so i tot i would juz share it here! it may help too =)

My school's floor tom had new drum head, and after the replacement, it would sound lyk most unmuffled floortom.. alot of overtones with no focus attack. So this is wad the percussionist did there:

take the stock head of the floortom, invert it, and place it on top of the floortom. it will overlap nicely with the rim. the sound will be warmer and more focused =)

p.s the onli tom that was used for this muffling was the floortom, so i dunno how the other toms would sound with this kind of muffling. =/

hey, that's an interesting way of muffling it. tried it with my floor tom and compared it to an O ring. the sound produced is much more muffled as compared to an O ring. now the stock tom skins come in handy! haha!

But it just made the floor tom easier to play...eg.executing double strokes are easier...so long term practice on it may be a problem. I rather you drop a small cushion inside the floor tom instead. That way, the "flex" of the playing surface is still relatively intact.

speaking of the rebound i would like some1 to help me experiment smth =X coz i dun hv a kit =X

hope some1 can help me test this:
by slapping on a 1-ply head on the tom and overlapping it with a 1-ply old/stock head, does the rebound equate to that of a 2-ply head? This just suddenly popped into my mind. Or any pros who know this pls tell us XD
