MISCONCEPTIONS of heavy metal.

All these talks about HEAVY METAL and its misconception is old school and has been bebated/talked/discussed for ages.

U guys shld check out this video:

"Heavy Metal: A Headbanger's Journey"

Produced in 2005 by a fellow Metalhead, Sam Dunn, he travelled the globe to various "Metal Meccas" to do a research abt Metal Music and its origins and why it is always looked upon as the "Devil's Music"

He got to interviewed the Godfather of Metal, Tony Iommi, in Tony's living room and talked abt how Black Sabbath's first album was considered to be the first heavy metal album.

How does the "Parental Warning: Explicit Lyrics" label came about?

Its all revealed in this video.

Artists he interviewed;

Geddy Lee (Rush): He talked abt the roots of Rush music and his influences. Heard of The Cheers. Even Iommi believes that The Cheers is the first band to incorporate ahve music before Black Sabbath.

The origin of the Devil's Horn, is discussed here. Ronnie James Dio was the the man who started it.

Slipknot (Corey and Joey), Lamb Of God (Mark and Randy), Dee Snider, Slayer (Kerry King and Tom Araya), Head (Korn), Lemmy (Motorhead), Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) and lots more.

An interesting segment in this video was during the interview with Necrobutcher and Blaspehemer (Mayhem). Apprently both had an overdose of alcohol and starts to get aggressive during the interview. As they said, "Beers and interviews don't match".

Another interesting interview was with Jorn Turnsberg about incidents of church burnings in Norway. When asked about how he looked at the incidents, he said, ' That's what i stand for".

The scariest 8O interview was with Gaahl of Gorgoroth. Why is it scary? U have to watch the video to find out.

Overall, my stand about Heavy metal and its misconception is nothing new.
Its how U accept it, that's what's important.

Cheers!

Metal = Noise. Rubbish music. Damage your ears.

if metal is noise, then wat is punk?

punk is whole different story. it's a mentalitiy whereby you could be totally rubbish with your instrument but if you lyrics actually mean something relevant to society then you're still good.

that means punk=noise. and they're proud of it.

Where to get the video?

I "import" online..

Hehehehehe!

Wats more abt the video is that, it shows Metal and sub-genere.

Example: Heavy Metal
____|____
| |
Power Trash

And so on and so forth.

Its very amusing to see that all these subgenre are all related under different umbrellas but ultimately rely their roots on Black Sabbath as the "original" founder.

Even Punk/Hardcore/Emocore and watever that's laden with distortion is somehow related with Heavy Metal.

Thank you all for contributing, I'm nearly finishing it already :D

I got my definition of heavy metal mostly from wikipedia, and I've rephrased everyth so here's how it is in my essay:

Heavy metal is a genre characterised by its loud volumes, distinctive heavy distortion, classical or symphonic sound and the emphasis on guitars and drums. The vocals vary greatly amongst bands, including everything from operatic and soprano to death growling, depending on the subgenre. Typical instruments include one lead and one rhythm guitar, bass guitar and drums, with the occasional keyboards (once again, depending on subgenre).

Its lyrical content is darker and graver as compared to the mainstream pop. It deals with war, events and people in history, myths and legends, nuclear annihilation, political and religious propaganda, light and dark, good and evil, hope and despair. It has roots in hard rock and British blues, even psychedelic rock and European classical music. It has many subgenres like death metal, black metal, gothic metal, nu-metal, speed metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal and thrash metal, just to name a few. Fans are more commonly known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”.

Enough for someone who has no prior knowledge of metal to understand? :)

IMO, pertaining to the definition above, there are more subgenres today than it was, say 10 yrs ago. many of these are 'perceived' & is the product of the media's inability to catagorize music types. terms like 'numetal' do not relate to the music definition per se but to the culture it extols.

maybe it's the image that metalheads protaits too.
but the way they dress etc.

i wonder who came up with that kind of image?

I'm disappointed. I thought by listening to metal music would make me cool and fierce. However, the only thing metal has turned me into is a fag.

Metal suck.

I mean sucks.
