working on minor pentatonic scale improvisations: i'm starting to know where the scales are but have little idea on how to really use them. how do you guys work on soloing on minor penta? by learning songs and stealing licks or by exploring on your own?

well, there are such things as free jams where you can use those scales in... free jams are like anyhow whacking for, lead, whatever it is... drums, keyboard, guitar, even bass? connect those pentatonics together and make something outta it...

Do both.

If you're stealing licks, make sure you also know what the chord is underneath the lick at that time. I made a big mistake of not doing this and later on, hard a hard time trying to catch up to understand the chords underneath and why things worked when they did.

Do a search online? Man... these things can be found easily online. ;)

Anyway, there have been posts abt how to improvise too... do a search on this forum...

If you wanna have an idea on how to play minor pentatonic scales... Do check out this song... Racer X - Technical difficulties... The solos is played in E minor pentatonic. So do listen to the song and get the feel... This was the song that really helped me learn how to fit stuff that revolve around the pentatonic minor scale. Also, do listen out to more paul gilbert stuff if u wanna learn more of playing in this scale... He uses a lot of it... Hope this helps..

Hmm

IMO, starting off with pentatonic (maj & min) would be good. Learn the rigid box positions 1st, tt is very essential for beginners who wanna grasp the concept fast.

Later u shud moved on to improvise the scales on songs (any will do). Plugged a mp3 into ur amp, play e tracks & jus let ur fingers move.

If u feel weird when u start to play the 1st note onwards, u r on e rite track. Slowly, ull begin to get e hang of it & b4 u even noe it, ull be solo-ing lyk crazy.

One thing to take note of - sometimes u might be too busy solo-ing in ur own world that even wen it doesnt sound good, ull jus keep thrashing it out.

Don't get too engrossed, remain a part of u dat listens while the others haf gone away shredding, so that u noe what u play & u can switch ur playing according to the progression of the songs.

This is my 2 cents. Anything u guys wanna add on?
