MIDI in

Hello

I have a Roland GR-20 that I want to use as a MIDI controller. It has a 'MIDI out' port at the back. I'm using Pro Tools M-Powered Essentials on my PC and I want to use the GR-20 data to do some sequencing. What kind of interface do I require (with cheap example pls) to plug my MIDI out cable so it can talk to the PC please?

Thanks in advance

Vern

in the manual of the gr 20, pg 28 onwards, theres couple of ways to connect the gr 20 midi purposes. Just wondering which one is the one you will be doing.

Another thing is that "want to use the gr-20 data to do some sequencing do you mean to use it with a gk pickup geetar, when strings being played, will send midi note into the gr 20, triggering audio(from gr 20 tone module) and have this audio send to daw/sequencer for recording/arrangement or just needing the midi data thats not triggering any sound module internally/externally(midi notes trigger from geetar with gk pickup or program change midi messages when switching patches, adjusting parameter settings etc)

So this is the idea I have in my head and I'm not sure which of those things you mention it fits: My guitar already has the GK-3 fitted - it's plugged into the GR-20, and it awaits a MIDI - PC interface which I hope to buy tomorrow. I can't play a keyboard (exceptTwinkle Twinkle Little Star) so I want to be able to use the guitar as an all-purpose controller - so whatever instrument/sound I have assigned in my midi-track in Pro Tools, I want the guitar to be able to trigger it.

can try the midi to usb cable first and see how it goes.

Imho, it will be easier to get a dedicated keyboard midi controller for using with virtual instrument. I used to have the gr 33, while using with geetar, its still ok. But to use it for triggering software instrument, i find the geetar not as useful, due to the inherent characteristic of vibrating strings triggering ghost note on some patches( especially when playing faster and across different strings), tracking, velocity and latency issue.

I cant play keyboard as well, but thanks to midi programming, its possible to sequence anything by drawing in midi notes, editing it and using automation without actually playing an instrument.

Got to tune the pickups nicely for your guitar.
It's a great concept but expect to do a lot of editing for the start - Triggering wrong notes, velocity and latency issues as mentioned above. It's really fun when used to trigger EFX though.

Best wishes.

Cheers chaps. I'm sure it won't be as straightforward as I dream of, but gotta try. Got a MIDI-USB cable from a buddy. Tried to plug in to PT Essentials M-Powered but it doesn't have the MIDI device setup capability - waiting on delivery of a full version of M-Powered so will let you know how it goes.
