don't split hairs. metal is metal, regardless of its manifestation. there are loads of pop-tinged metal outfits out there; some like them, some don't. if you have certain preferences, do not castigate the rest.
a band deserves to have their musical directions, Dimmu included. so if they choose not to propel whatever they started off with, it doesn't make them 'lousy'. opeth is one.
i'm currently engaged in a heated discussion with a few 'purists' as to wheather Blut Aus Nord's new release, MoRT, is 'black metal' per se. if it isn't, is the band lousy for doing so?
They made some exceptional Black Metal in their early days. Stormblast is/was one of their best works. Then they degenerated to a pop-band that uses rock song formats with catchy sing-a-long lyrics of pointless pseudo blasphemy. Hail Satan! ...
simply put, MoRT strayed from The Work Which Transformed God but IMO the deviation was tasteful & still very Blut Aus Nord. the change was notably in the guitars which are quite devoid of the typical back metal grind passages but keep in mind that majority of the tracks feature fretless guitars.
