Max Roach, a Founder of Modern Jazz, Dies at 83
By PETER KEEPNEWS

Max Roach, a founder of modern jazz who rewrote the rules of drumming in the 1940’s and spent the rest of his career breaking musical barriers and defying listeners’ expectations, died early today in Manhattan. He was 83.

His death was announced today by a spokesman for Blue Note records, on which he frequently appeared. No cause was given. Mr. Roach had been known to be ill for several years.

As a young man, Mr. Roach, a percussion virtuoso capable of playing at the most brutal tempos with subtlety as well as power, was among a small circle of adventurous musicians who brought about wholesale changes in jazz. He remained adventurous to the end.

Over the years he challenged both his audiences and himself by working not just with standard jazz instrumentation, and not just in traditional jazz venues, but in a wide variety of contexts, some of them well beyond the confines of jazz as that word is generally understood.

Hopefully someone or some company will try to bring these legends to S'pore to conduct clinics before they pass on. I know it's difficult and maybe even very expensive but it will be beneficial to the local drumming community to get a lesson or two from them.

It is always my dream for the following drummers to do a clinic here:

1) Ed Thigpen
2) Roy Haynes
3) Jim Chapin
4) Louie Bellson
5) Joe Morello

These drummers had played with the greatest musicians alive and it will be great to study under them and just to listen to their stories of the great.

Whoa, if I could catch Louie Bellson...

Sometimes, age just seems so fragile. And when they are gone, they are gone. :?

Yah bro.

Seize the day, and don't do things that you will regret later....

You don't need to follow the norm to be successful in life.... follow your heart and your passion!!!

maybe someone can start posting more favourite/famous pieces of him? i bet everyone would love to hear more from a jazz masters from him man~!

Check out recordings of him with Clifford Brown and Sonny Rollins.

Also check out his composition on the drums "The Drum Also Waltzes" from one of his solo albums (can't remember the album).
