Hey! Im a newbie here:). i need an answer to this question. do i need to make my abdomen tight when singing both high and low range? if yes, how to? just push my stomach forward?

eh..depends on what type of sound you basically want coming out. choir trained ppl would definitely tell u to let the sound come from your stomach..(no offence to choir trained fellow vocalists).. but sometimes, wen singing rock..its important to noe wen to use what..sometimes let the sound come from your throat..sometimes let it come from your stomach..though stomach is actualli clearer n more "powerful" as well as less strainous on the voice..it takes out the edge in ur voice..alternative bands like say audioslave's chris cornell, even lifehouse, the calling etc..would tend to haf de voice come from the throat..to get de edge..but to get the evanescence type of voice..u'd use from the stomach..

having said that, if u wan a stomach voice...u haf to relax..n feel de air coming from ur stomach outwards..dat is to say wen ur singing..u should feel like there's dis reli hard ball at ur stomach den u can't reli press down..ur facial muscles should also feel v.relaxed..dat is to say u shouldn't look constipated..open ur mouth slightly bigger would help to draw out the voice too..normally stomach voice is easier to up to higher notes. (do not confuse de relaxedness of being able to reach these higher notes wid falsetto..which comes under different technique..notin to do wid stomach)

as for throat..its kinda simple..everitin should feel like all the air is coming from your throat..n yes..now ur facial muscles do contract more..n u should b able to feel it too..like ur eyebrows would be more "screwed up"..n if u go to v.high notes..u'll notice ur face feels like bursting..yea..n gives ya de reli throaty voice..husky for guys..sexy for girls.. haha..do note however dat u do run de risk of straining ur voice wen singing dis way..tho heck..i do it all de time for most songs too..haha..jus dun strain can alr.

yup..hope u understand wad i'm trying to say..heh..though i've nv received ani vocal training or wadeva.all dis goes by personal experience..:)

Hey Dear

yeah it is. If it's a slight stretch sorta feeling then it's okay, but it shouldnt persist after you release or be a piercing sorta thing. Also, when you inhale, your focus shouldnt be on making it tight. It should be on getting the air in and knowing how to control the outflow.

Just remember not to let the shoulders raise - bacause the technique generally screws up once you go into lung breaths too much.

Btw, worms_eat_birds really gave some good stuff to consider too. It's all about how you decide to use your voice. Just don't screw it up. :)

that was cool info.. learned something new!!

there's one more thing i'd like to ask. i find it hard to relax my toungue muscle.. i have to control it every time i sing. i know to sound nice u have to keep ur toungue relaxed. but it's hard. how do u guys do it?

haha..actualli..ur tongue is used purely for articulation..to prove this point..try tensing up ur tongue n talking..u would realise that its almost impossible to pronouce certain alphabets like "r". haha..sometimes..ur tongue can be used for doing fake vibratos too..hehe..by simply oscillating ur tongue up and down.(but dat needs abit of practice) anyway, i believe ur tongue becoming tensed up might be due to certain level of pressure that u place upon urself wen ur singing, try to relax? or the other way would b to sing a note out loud..n keep oscillating ur tongue..up n down..such that it'd sound like this "la*pause*la*pause*la*pause*la*pause*" assuming..ur singing "la" the pauses are of coz v.short. haha..after awhile, should feel ur tongue loosening up?
point to note also wen ur covering other bands, listen to the way they articulate the words. Sometimes, to sound like the band ur covering, its not just ur voice tone but also ur articulation of the words. Haha..especially if ur covering a british band..ur articulation would very well determine if u successfully covered the song. so when listening, try and contort ur tongue in various ways till u find the articulation u want..haha..in the process..u actually do exercise ur tongue..:) altho i dun encourage doing covers...but hey..wen covering..these are good tins to do..haha..yea..hope all that was understandable again..

i find it hard to keep my toungue relaxed for some vowels like EH or AY (stAY). the back of my toungue will raise and stiffen.

hmm..ok what..dun need to worry about that..its pretty natural actualli..in any case if it reli stiffens very badly its because ur using alot of ur throat voice..so ur entire mouth area sorta stiffens up.. including de back of ur tongue..
