Mac vs PC for audio recording

[=kongwee

Sad but so true:???:
And I hear Logic is a joy to use, as my Vista machine roars...
Like, if you like FinalCut Pro, which is super cool, you gotta get a Mac.

The choice of Mac or PC should have nothing to do with the main DAW software. Each platform has their own "excellent" DAW software - and there is no perfect DAW software as each has it's own strengths and weaknesses.

And if you are going to dedicated your PC to DAW, you don't have to worry about Vista. Because you'll not be using all the eye-candy anyway. You'll be removing all the bloat making Vista look like Windows 98. Vista is fast once optimised.

Also, dual booting is a great cost saving solution. You don't really have to have one machine for DAW - you just need to have one boot partition dedicated to DAW. It's just like having 2 entirely separate machines within one machine.

This is a good suggesstion. I second this...you can play around with your requirements on this set-up as Cheez said..:D

That is why I don't get it why need two PC. Some more you could buy casing with detachable harddrive. One harddisk for whatever, one harddisk for DAW.
But don't cheapo on harddrive. Spend as much as you can for server or enterprise grade HDD.

I do have a few systems around. Once I start rendering on 1 system, I will jump on another system to do other work. The type of system and the configuration will only make sense to the person who uses them.

wow, you break your DAW into few rack lah. I thought of doing something like MUSE system or gigastudio system, but broke liao.

One thing about buying Mac, call up Apple Online Store for any discount. A lot of time they are better than dealer outside. My friend getting huge discount buying bulk under company name. Even a few piece is better than student price.

I have
1) Asus EEEPC 4G upgraded 2gbram
2) HP IntelCore2Duo 1.6ghz , 1gbram. (free from starhub)
3) Desktop PC Core2Duo 2.4ghz , 4gb ram.

My DAWs are either Cool Edit or Cubase (the one that comes with my Zoom H4s. I got 2 Zoom H4s and 1 Zoom H2, and 1 Presonus FP10. 4 audio interfaces to ensure my stability with the soundcard-backbone side.)

1) weighs 1kg, i use it to do audio cleanup.very light mixing and 2 input recording and yes it looks something like this :

optimal for boring CNY visiting when your wife is playing mahjong and there's shitload of ppl in the living room and no one in the kitchen. this was at my wife's ex company's ex colleague's house. and yeah that's the 1TB USB hdd.

2) weighs sorta more, i use it to do multitrack recording (its got a firewire port), slightly heavier duty mixing and DV video capturing.

3) i don't carry it around. there's 4 + 1 (USB hdd)terabyte of hdd in here. I use it to do video rendering + optimal audio mixing speed.
i'm done dual booting cos I need to utilize all 4 SATA slots or hard disk data storage be it video/audio/dual backup clone. so my main drive is my "abuse drive"

some ppl like Cheez will i know I used to "endorse DVD-r" back up ,but now the prices of hdd has dropped so much, (but DVD prices never dropped!) double copying on HDD is way faster and worth it.

Probably OT - but Kongwee, Muse works differently. It's not PC dependent and is meant to run on it's own. As for Giga, their days are over. I had been using Giga since vesion 1 and 2. Never upgraded to 3. Almost upgraded to 4 when Tascam pulled the plug. I'm still sore, as I have more than 120GB of Giga samples. I've switched to Kontakt, but cross-converting formats always have problems particularly the articulations and key-switches. So...I'm VERY unhappy with Tascam. But yes, multiple rack PC is nice. But with 64-bit taking more presence in DAW, we should be able to cut down in number of rack PCs.

But I see sampler base like you say from NI. They keep getting bigger. Even can went into terabyte.Rack may not go away in number, and I think HDD technology got a bit of bottom neck Anyway, it is too early for me to have that kind of toys.

it's a PC thing... mac users wouldn't understand...

actually my definition of mac-only users are ppl who suck at PC maintenance. thats why they'd fork out cash to pay more for stability. but still i've seen mac's fail... when they do it's ugly.(cos you take their stability for granted) ...

True. I've work with G5s that works slower than a single core pentium 4. It is how computer system itself is set up to do. Computer maintenence is important. To me, there is no good or bad, it is how good are u at using a mac or a pc. It is the same for DAWs. The argument can never end. People who are cubase, logic followers love their DAWs because it works well the way the people who used it. If im good at cubase and i earn my income from using cubase, why would i use logic or any other DAW that im bad at which slows down my workflow, might screw up my client's project resulting is less income for myself.

For me, i go for pcs because the end of the day, with the same amount of money, i can buy better mics and other hardware which gives me better recordings than if i purchase a mac with same specs and a cheaper microphone. The end product is more important than the PC or room acoustic, gears, or DAWs etc. If your music suck, you buy anything also sound sucky. If ur drumming sucks, why do u even care about the room acoustics when everyone is turned off by ur playing already. If your guitar playing sucks, i give u a 10k guitar to play, it might just sound like any 300 bucks guitar.

Another factor to consider is support. I recall my organisation's media department bought 2 beautiful Mac Pros. Both crashed - and they were left lying there for a few months because nobody in the IT support side could fix them (or knows how to fix them).

That tells me:
1. Macs do crash
2. Not many people know what to do with it when that happens (at least not me)
