how about strats? anything in <$500 price range? i can only afford squier copies right?

dun condemn "yamaha", i last time also used to be smoked by friends they been telling me yamaha this yamaha tat. always believed them until i myself tried out yamaha pac012m and pac112j (but i think these 2 similar models are sold out ahaaha). a fat strat, its really worth very single cent u pay IMHO. since u like les paul design, why dun u get a 2nd hand epiphone or get craftsman lp copy? having a guitar tat have yr favourite design sometimes will motivate pp to play better yeah. as for the ibanez, i nto too sure about ibanez stuff.

For under 500 there are loads of strat copies around. Can definitely get a Squire.

I feel that the squire is a great first electric. Cheap, light, versatile and most importantly comfortable. Try to get a second hand one cause i got a feeling that it ain't gonna be your last one.

any old hands can guide me in what to look out for? i've only tried my hand at acoustic guitars.. so need some help in what to look out for in a good electric guitar.. if anybody can provide a good model that'll be great too.. any brand is fine except yamaha.. and my budget is roughly $400, non-inclusive of amps..

thanks!

hi there 8)

have you checked out SOFT's review database? http://www.soft.com.sg/new/modules.php?name=MReviews&op=list_revs&cid=4&scid=11

my recommendations:

Cort M-200 (list: $400)

LTD M-50 (list: $460)

...& the RG321 as per ShredCow's recommendation- highly recommended

The LTD M-50 I don't really like.. Something about the Neck doesn't feel right..

the RG321 is great! somehow i picked it over the SZ.. but it's just personal preference, i've played the wizard neck ever since i started guitar

Wow.. Thats good.. Anyway do you when is the end of the year sale at Swee Lee?? What I mean is the 50% sale.. 8)

aiya sales always come around. i play guitar for less than a year, but have already heard of 3 sales at least. the cort posted up there is not bad actually.

A lot of sales coming up I know.. But I don't know the real date actually.. Must prepare for the 50% sale so that I can buy.. :D

ARGH. :(
looks like i'll have to stick to my plan.. now evaluating btwn these choices:

Ibanez PGM3 - $650
Epi LP Standard - $450
Fender MIM Fat Strat - $750
Ibanez RG321 - $500

the fat strat stretches my budget but if its really good i'm willing to fork out extra.. any opinions on these?

I suggest you go and try out all your choices before deciding to buy a guitar.

See which one you like best and also the type of music that you play. Its very exciting to get your first electric but don't rush into it.

Ibanez PGM3 - $650
Epi LP Standard - $450
Fender MIM Fat Strat - $750
Ibanez RG321 - $500

These are all completely different guitars that can do completely different things and have completely different feels. Except maybe the 2 Ibanez's.

If you have some musical tastes, you should get a guitar according to what you want to be playing, or at least be learning to play.

For example, if you are into Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, or stuff like that and you wanna shred or something, then yes, get the PGM3.
If you are into Led Zepplin, Guns and Roses, classic rock stuff, getthe LP.
If you are into SRV, Clapton, Gilmore, less heavy, bluesy or psychedelic stuff, get the strat.
Look at what your idols are playing and get something similar.

If you are totally new with not much musical tastes, I suggest you get something easy to deal with. Meaning easy to retune, change strings, stuff like that. Also, try to get something with a better resale value, cos very likely as you progress and start to know what you want in a guitar, you'll wanna get another one.

the guy at swee lee recommended me a cort kx1 today.. sells for $500.. sounded quite nice.. anybody owns it?

i'm actually looking to play pop-rock/punk stuff.. things like green day and rooster
