Local Music Magazines.

Greetings all at SOFT, would just like to know your views on a local music magazine. Gig reviews, CD reviews, topic discussions, anything and about everything local music. No restrictions whatsoever, from ska to death metal to jazz to emocore to indie to local bedroom artists.

What do you guys think of the idea? Please flame me if you must. ;)

If they are individuals who are interested or have already started such projects similar to the above, please please let me know.

Cheers all!

I think its a great idea,

But correct me if I'm wrong, I think someone already suggested this idea....

i think it'd be great! but better if we know where exactly they're sold at. cause sometimes go alot of mama shops/ book stores also cannot find. eg. Junk.

wooit....

its all up to the public whether to buy a copy of this mag or not...

usually its all up to the support whether majority wants this type of mag or not...

but i think its worth it... i think our underground scene needs a some kind of written media to be published about them....

XLayar: Really? Could you point me in the direction of that very cool individual? :) Thanks ah.

Rengaw: It'll be too ambitious if I say 7-11 or Cheers or most easy to find available shops. The idea is still in the initial stages of preparation. No solid material whatsoever.

Just want to find out if I have the general concensus of local musicians and music lovers alike.

Dilahk: Thanks! I certainly hope to make it happen as well. But there are alot of issues at hand; such as the lack of a publication team and such.

The general concept is simple. A magazine for local band to be mentioned, gig reviews, band reviews, cd reviews, location reviews. Anything music and anything local. Any god damn genre, skacore to electronic black metal to death indie. Anything goes. However, I do not believe in following local bands blindly.

Please guys, if there are people who would like to see the magazine take place. Please, make it known on this forum page.

Once again, if there are people who have already started similar projects. I would really like to get in touch with you, do let me know. I am very keen on this.

Hi DONKS,

I think your idea sounds awesome. I'm sure that there are many individuals thinking of doing such a thing, but not many have actually done it.

Keep in mind though, a magazine about local music is still essentially a business venture.

Here's a few things you should keep in mind:

(in no specific order)

1) Your specific target audience
2) Your potential advertisers (this is where most of your moo-lah comes from)
3) Where/how you're gonna get your magazine printed, your storage space for your magazines (you can't possibly pile them at home now can you?)
4) How are you going to distribute? Hire drivers/vans/etc?
5) Where are you gonna get your CAPITAL?
6) Alliances you could make with existing magazines/companies/record labels/podcasts/anything to do with magazines, media, music.
7) How are you going to advertise your magazine?

Coincidentally enough, I just did a business proposal on setting up a magazine, and I've got a few ideas already up and running. I'm a media student, see. P

Add me on msn if you're interested =)

candie, you should have done a case study on SOFT! then I can use it to attract advertisers. ha..ha..

Haha oh yeah! I did marketing last semester, should have chosen SOFT as my product and then pass the marketing plan to you after I submitted :D Pepper marketed Rampage on the Airwaves if I'm not wrong!

advertisement

we will wish to advertise in such a magazine!

that should generate some revenue for you guys.

maybe an occasional gift voucher thrown in for good measure too.

y dun u sell it at some jamming place so that we can easily go there......

And try add in more pics maybe some local band or scene pics???

i think starting out in selling at various jamming places would be a good idea if you're running low on capital? i'm sure the jamming places wouldn't mind lending you the space for free.

Good luck on it btw! will be waiting to buy the first copy if it launches. :D

DONKS, replied you in your PM.

Like what sis candie sis-tah (still in a very hip-hop-till-you-don't-stop mood here) said,

advertising revenue is THE only way which most magazines sustain operations.

In the past 2 years, there are 5 upstarts in the lifestyle magazines section. Most of them have closed down only after the 1st issue. Improper planning and waaaaayyyyyyyy too many print magazines out there.

Why would I wanna advertise with you when Seventeen has a better reach? Important issues to consider.

In addition, you can look at the Malaysian mag, JUNK which is finally available in Kino, Borders and Times. They placed a strong emphasis in regional music. And it comes with a free CD every issue. Hard to match that? I know.

Hey Softies, major thanks for the replies. Very much appreciated. Thanks for all the opinions, advice, etc. Will certainly take all the guidelines and figure out something.

Rest assured, I will definitely post any information up here if this project goes up and running.

Many thanks once again.

If there are any updates, it will definitely be posted up here.

Thanks all once again. If you guys have any ideas, please feel free to PM me.

Cheers!

Oh yeah, sorry. I thought about this for a long time on the bus back this morning but it slipped past me to post this up.

Let's say we were to review a band. Which bands(from any music scene/genre) would you like to hear about?

Many thanks guys!
