Line6 Variax Bass discontinued??

When did that happen? No market for such a product? Or too cumbersome with the 6-AA batteries/XPS-DI power box for live gig? This would be applicable for other Variax product lines right? Any insight on the discontinuation?

No wonder City Music previous sales didnt include the Variax Bass (although the regular Variax guitar and acoustic were on offer).

ouch! first time I saw this bass, I though this would revolutionize the bass world. my only fear is that it might sound artificial. I guess no one really wants a bass like this. my only opinion is that they should have made the looks of the bass better.

but why is the variax guitar still available? this means there is a market for modelling guitars (and maybe bass).

if i can grab hold of a variax bass cheap, i might pull out the electronics and install into a better body with luthier's help.

i read the specs of the guitar, apparently u dun need to tune the guitar, just set the guitar pre-set either drop D or C or standard E or D, plug in and rock it

the amount of money sunk into r&d and the production costs would be the same regardless of whether it is a bass or a guitar.

but it is a fact that the market for bass gear is smaller than that for guitars. that is probably because bass can be considered a niche of the guitar market. market size determining the demand for the product.

rather than the variax guitar being more commercially viable than the variax bass, a more likely explanation would be that, while the variax technology itself may not be too hot, the variax guitar generates more revenue only by virtue of the guitar market being bigger than the bass market, rather than the variax guitar being a better product than the variax bass. perhaps the sales volume of the variax guitar was enough to keep it in line6's product line, while the variax bass was unsustainable.

another reason could be that with a smaller bass market, there are fewer players (manufacturers). fewer players means each player has a larger market share (by percentage). larger market share makes the brand more powerful, due to loyalty, penetration and what not. so while the bass market is smaller, the competition for precious market share would be fiercer.

Was researching using the net, apparently Line6 has killed the Variax Bass product line since back in 2007. They have apparently kept quiet about this so that all existing stocks with (world-wide) dealers could be sold out. Sneaky huh?
