left hand technique (keyboard)

hi all!

i was just wondering if any of you can relate to this experience of mine.

you know when you actually play a piece, pop piece to be exact, do you feel that the notes you play on the left hand are rather limited?

i'm trying to learn how to improve the way i play the chords on my left hand so that the sound will be thicker but not chunky.

hope you guys get what i mean. thanks. :D

the left hand usually plays the root and 5th note to avoid clashing of the chords wheras the RH plays the remaining sometimes more.

you could look up the WALKING BASS technique if you are interested to add variety to your songs espically jazz standards songs. however its not easy to learn.

however i myself tend not to follow the rule when i play pop songs and try to let my LH plays 4 notes of the maj 7 chords or etc which i dono if its wrong.( please please tell me if this way is wrong )

but do look up the walking bass technique it would be a very MUST HAVE technique for keyboardist now :)

another technique is lesser notes in ur bass note dosent means your BASS cannot be creative try experiment with rhythm. i always observe bass movement in songs and try to play them with my LH. all try observe drums rhythm there must be a communication btw ur LH and RH to make ur playing more creative and bombastic.

just a food for thought :)

I think it may be easier explained when seen in action than read.

What about this: if the keyboardists in SOFT agree to video tape their playing in short clips, we can come up with a library of various techniques (interpreted by different keyboardists). We can cover things from left-hand to 4-parts to various improvisational techniques etc.

What do you think?

2 things:

1. There must be some kind of video hosting. Too difficult for SOFT to host it since it may potentially take up too much bandwidth and space. If there is some kind of free hosting that all clips can be stored in one place, maybe it's possible...

2. SOFT keyboardists need to be willing and respond...

can upload the video to www.youtube.com and then link them here?

we can maybe list out a chord chart. kinda chord progression for a virtual song and then invite everyone to do the keyboard part.

yeap! that'd be way cool! i agree that it's easier to watch and learn, or for that matter, hear and learn.

and personally i think the keys are the most neglected instrument in a band! mmm to me la. cos most of my friends just get overly obsessed with the e guits. haha. :D

redspiffy, why not you post the first chord progression? dont tell us the song title or style. just the chords and we will come up with our own version.

hmm soft, i don't really get what you're saying. bother to explain the part about not telling you guys the song title or the style? thanks loads.

Hmmm It would be a great pity for this thread to fade; really useful if the screening of videos of teaching demos can take off! Can someone come up with a simple chord progression? For example, maybe in the key of C or something- using the 'descending pop scale' chinese pop music frequently employs these days. From C , Em(2nd inversion), Am, G, F, Em, Dm, C

Other better examples are welcome too =)

Perhaps host it on Youtube and link it here. It would be superb for beginner enthusiasts.

Is this still on the topic of left-hand technique?

I think it's a good idea to revive this thread. And we can expand it to include more techniques.
