the nevborn guitars were actively used in NOTHING, the latest release Catch 33, sees them back to their trusty 7s... (although the 8s can be heard on some tracks).

anyway, jazz maestro Charlie Hunter (pic above) have been using the 8-string for quite some time already... notice the 'fanned' out frets of his guitar? that was necessary to accommodate some bass strings in there 8)

Fanned frets really does give that weird illusion when looking at certain angles. But those 8 stringers look wicked

with the 8 string guitars and the style of their music... whats their bassist doing around?

When the bassist takes a dump, the 8 strings come in :) . Anyway the 8 stringer doesn't make the bass player redundant, the walking basslines come in when the bass player takes a solo.

can anyone explain the concept of the FAN frets? ....

i noticed our GAIN10's james bay also got a 8 string custom monster with fanned frets as well... why ah?

it's for intonation accuracy, especially when thick strings are involved. there's another way to tackle this intonation issue, which is via the bridge string saddles. however, movements here are limited.

Heh heh, also for string tension. Imagine a high A string 25". Bend a semitone and it snaps. The shorter scale length on the treble side makes it a tad more slinky.

From standard guitar and bass string packs. Mix and match. It's expensive stuff to upkeep.

haha im sure the guitarist wont mind la.

its like buying a sports car then worrying about fuel consumption.

hey chanmin, as stated on de conklin webby www.conklinguitars.com the fanned frets serve the purpose of providing multiple scale lengths for all de strings. for eg de lower strings have a 27inch scale while de thinner strings have 25.5inch scales. this makes intonation much more accurate. but i wonder how chording will be like with fanned frets.
