kaossilator & mini kaoss pad

hi guys!
i've been down to city music,
and checked out these 2 things.

apparently, the salesperson wasnt able to give me a good explanation on the uses of these 2 items, he just showed me that the big kaoos pad was able to record some loops, and then playback. thats all..

may i ask, whats the difference between a mini kp and the kaossilator?
and ... what are they usually used for?

if someone has any demo or recordings of how its used, would be good and easier for me to understand. :)

hope you keyboard maestros can help me out,
and share w this new and learning keyboardist. =)

i have the kp3, mini kp and kaossilator.

the mini kp as the name, is a much scale down version of the bigger one. It has 90% of the sound which the bigger one has. Other than that, its lacking in all the features compared to the bigger one(midi, sampling, storing loops via micro sd card etc)

Both the kp3 and mini kp are basically sound processor(the last few setting in both do provide sounds which can be played via the touch pad). Being sound processer, you will need to feed input(sound, vocal, music etc), into the thing, select any patches and using the touch pad to manipulate the sound

think of the pad as guitar effect pedal. Sound go in, get effected and output to what we hear. Only different is such that for guitar effect pedal, the effect processing of what we feed in, is done automatically while the kaoss pad processing of what we feed in, occurs only when we touch the pad.

Kaossilator, on the other hand, is not an effect processor. It is a synth/sound generator. Within the kaossilator, it contained wind howling, falling star, piano, drum, flute, trumpet etc patches and many other more. Theres no input on the kaossilator. What it does is providing sound which you can play on the touch pad and output it to PA, amp etc. Theres a basic looping function within the kaossilator which allows you to record, playback and overdub using the sound available inside.

In short, kaoss pad processed sound/vocal, kaossilator provide sounds. The kaoss pad is more for DJ and electronic artist who need to manipulate sound while playing and kaossilator more for creating sound to add on in any music one is playing(just like any other musical instrument). In recent years, some people have been using kaoss pad with guitar as well(though there need to be extra things to add in, in order for geetar signal to work with KP).

Both doesnt need any keyboard knowledge to play with. As long can touch the pad, there will be sound to add on to whatever music one is playing.

oh gosh,
your explanation is perfect!
thanks so much bro!
u cleared alot of doubts! much appreciated. =)

okay, i got a question,
if there is no input for the kaossilator..
but there're those basic sounds like piano, flute, blabla,
as you've mentioned.. how do we 'play' them then?

like how do we say.... like.
play around with the notes?

playing it can be easy and quirky as well.

on the touch pad, imagine it as a graph with x and y axis. Horizontal and vertical movement of finger on the pad will change parameters. Moving it in diagonal direction across the pad will affect both parameters represented across the x and y axis. Heh, its not as wanky as it sound though. As long you put finger on the pad and draw in any direction, you can change couple of parameters like notes/pitches/filter amount/volume etc

Within the kptor, you can set different scales(up to 31 scales) and various key signature. So if you are using the kptor to play along with any song and already knowing the key of that tune, you can select the key/patch and play along with the song, via touching the touch pad. Its hard to go out of tune(with patches of musical instrument sound) with the song/music as long as the key is set to the right one.

that said, imho, certain instrument patches in it aint really suitable to play via the pad. Piano is one of it. Most of the time, if we are using our finger to tap the thingy, its hard to hit the same place and at the same time, to have our finger tip with the same amount of flesh touching the pad. Sometime even when the finger is on the same spot, but just tilted a bit, the note will jump.

for what iam doing, i prefer the kaossilator for adding effect sounds than using it for proper notes related instrument.

yup i'm wondering that about the kaossilator too...

interesting... thanks for the expl!

Sorry for the off topic, quite informative info you've got there, but can I use the kp as a vocal effect? Is there mic jack input?

I got them too,
Bur seriously I have no idea how to connect Mini KP to Ktor,
do we need to mixer to connect two of these ?
or we need to get any cable?

does anybody know abt this?

Thanks! in advance.

rca cable is what you need, any neighbourhood diy/audio/video shop should sell those.

mini kp- sound processor
kaossilator- sound generator

you can only connect the sound generator to sound processor. Output(kaossilator) to input(mini kp) and output(mini kp) to pa/amp. Just a matter of connecting output to input with rca cables

if connecting to instrument amp, then you need to get a rca to 1/4 inch phone jack. Again, neighbourhodd diy store sell those.

for how rca cable and rca to 1/8' phone jack look like, google for it.
