Haha..my class is better...they dun really listen to rock..most people are into..eh....Mandopop stars like 5566. And they tell me stuff like..oh some member of 5566 plays the guitar but he only knows the basics (me too, u know??*rolls eyes) or some other member plays the piano (but like how well?)

And I've had lots of ppl telling me Yoshiki looks like some Satanic dunno wad when I play X videos..(though they go wah! when Yoshiki starts on his crazy running notes on the piano)

My friend played Gackt's Vanilla live video in class once and some ppl got real disgusted..(no taste lar...)

my secondary school class also like that. People sings avril and 5566. And once i said 5566 not nice in a crude way, people diss me on irc and stuff like that. Only like 4 of us listen to IM and Led Zepp and of cos X-japan, people say we cock lah this and that, and i did not know the other 3 fellas in class listen to these stuff until i left secondary school. Then we always try to show stuff new to them they will say wad metal/rock is noisy lah, not music and satanic. wad the hell...people jus dunno how to appreciate fine arts.

its all about understanding. If you feel irritated when people start talking about those cheesy group, how about when you are telling them about those bands that you think they rock and play real music....... isn't it the same as doing what they are doing.......

sorry, if i do offend anyone, just my 0.000000cent.....

my band played for our sch open house. those guys want us to play busted, simple plan. and qing tian. Sad eh.

everyone's stereotyping any heavy stuff(metallica) or anything that sounds unconventional, and weird (incubus) as satanic music. Its kinda hard to even start a band... but i did.

Haha i heard of such things too. But even my fren who is into playing guitar learns that song as well. I did want to learn that song like other girls, but was lazy to learn it.

I haven't even listened to that song :D

Anyway, I don't get discriminated for my musical tastes, Thank God 8)

Anyway as far as guitar skills is concerned, its good to learn music theory, its very important. Can learn to read scores 8)

I bought a Led Zeppelin score book for 44.90 and I 'm struggling with it(need to read up more on music theory).

like tat die lor........ lazyness can kill........ imaging how fillfulling 2 learn how 2 play a song completely....... the feeling is damm great, man...........

musical theory enables you to Read music notation. It is useful if you intend to take your passion for music all the way. being a sessionist... professional level player..you will have a distinct advantage if you can sight read.

however.

can read music dooesnt mean you can play well. I know a few people who talk about ..augmented chords..diminished...formula for dunno what scales...etc..all the CHEEM stuff and pick up a guitar and play basic pentatonics.

theory is good. but you dun need it to become a good guitar player.

Got reminded of my sec sch days as well, i remember listening to Nirvana and this fren of mine came up to me and said she hates Nirvana cos it was satanic,i juz looked at her and went back to my music...haha thts was so funny. I dun understand some of this people sometimes, i know music is subjective but Nirvana = satanic?? Ask her go listen Morbid Angel then she know.

I think theory is very important. It sort of helps you to see the links between different things. I think many people picked up bits and pieces after playing for years but they never really understood why. Just like how a song moves say from C major to A minor to F major etc.. ever wondered why?? You might have realised to move on, some chords sound right, others don't...you need theory to understand why...

i think if you have no theory at all..true..u might practise really hard and get all your notes right but your playing might still be completely empty. It's just like 2 people playing the same piece. One can make it sound like a million bucks whereas the other sounds flat...why?? cos one might know how to phrase, add in dynamics (crescendo etc.), sing the different lines (say it's contrapuntal).. stuff like that whereas the other one has no idea what to do other than play the right notes in the right time.

just take a look at the classical composers..they know their theory inside out and that's what helped them to write great classics which have survived centuries and most importantly to play their own compositions well

Just like you know how to drive a car, but you don't know the street laws.

hehehe, sooner or later kenna accident.

Hahaha... all this school stories really reminded me of an incident in my JC

It was a teachers' day concert and I formed a band to perform "Woman in Chains" by Tears for Fears... we really rehearsed like siao and I think we were really tight!

The performance went well and the crowd loved the song but the teachers hated it! Saying that the song was demeaning to female teachers... but the lyrics of the song was actually about freeing them from the chains that bind them!

Well, all I wanna say is that even if you have the best intentions, you can't please everyone...
