coming from a choral background (was in choir for 6 years)...
usually when we sing, we are encouraged to take in breaths from our mouth. and when we breathe in, we do not take those kind of deliberate breaths that causes you to raise your shoulders, but by expanding your diaphragm. it's like taking breaths while swimming, when underwater, the breath comes out, then when taking a breath between strokes, just need to open your mouth and the air will go in.
