Hi, I'm looking for John Frusciante's pickups, but Google has been anything but helpful, with recommendations from Texas Hots, to Mother's Milk, to Noiseless Pups, to Seymour Duncan Antiquities.

Arghh. Help please, thanks!!

are they Frusciante's pickups? Never heard of them. I only knew he uses original 57' & 62' stratocasters & tele & a Gretsch.

its the amps. i think you watched the slane castle dvd is it? the amps make the most difference in tone. not pickups.

Things you need to be John Frusciante.

Vintage guitars (yes 57 and 62 strats. He doesn't use the Gretsch anymore by the way)
Vintage Marshall Amps (60s era, he has one that is handwired, no more than 1000 made I think)
Vintage Big Muff Pi and Ibanez WH-10 Wah

He doesn't have a 57 strat, he's got a 55.

55 2TS
62 3TS
61 Oly white
63 Fiesta red

Are those he uses on tour, but the 55 is less commonly used nowadays.

He uses a new big muff pi, and Marshall major for cleans and silver jubilee for crunch. He uses fender showmans with the gretsch WF.

Oh my mistake. His favourite guitar is the 62' 3TS, which Anthony Keidis gave him when he just got back from drug rehab (having sold all his axes for drug money).

If I'm not wrong the 55 strat is maple fingerboard.

Def a 55. His guitar tech confirmed and also I've got pics of it, its an ash bodied one.

Its the one with a chunk of lacquer has gone missing from the fretboard.

That's true. He also has a fender jaguar in red, which he bought for himself just before anthony kiedis invited him to join rhcp again... he used that as a guitar for warming up.

As for the 62' 3ts, the tech or was it himself, confirmed that the pickups weren't original. He used to think it was all original vintage pickups, but after a tech opened up the guitar they discovered that the guitar was fitted with sd antiquities.

The Red Jaguar was bought because he lost his guitars in a house fire. It was actively used in the pre Californication period especially on the song Around The World.

he uses vintage noiseless pickups for his 62 strat at the moment.
and he has the mxr micro amp, which is always on.

he didnt sell most his guitars for drug money, his house burnt down along with all the guitars he had in it. and no he doesnt use his white falcon anymore. unless you have enough cash for a vintage strat, try mother's milk, they are designed to sound close.

No matter what pickups u use, its really difficult to get his tone. His amps go at max power when on stage which makes all the difference. But as far as pickups go, i recommend Fender Texas specials. I find that of all the single coils, these produce the best tone.

in case the link does not work, here's the post:

In the April 2009 edition of Vintage Guitar (page. 122) John (Red Hot Chile Peppers) is asked:

Have you kept the original pickups in your Strats?

Here's his reply:

I would like to, but they do eventually need to be changed. On my '55, I bought it with an expert who insisted we open it up to see if the pickups were original. He and the people at the store all thought that they were original. Then years later, we found out that they were Seymour Duncan Vintage Strat pickups. They are so similar to the original that it's hard to tell the difference in sound. I had my '62, which has the original pickups, and then I had the '55 with the Duncans, and the sound was very similar. The differences had more to do with the guitars than the pickups. Eventually, I had to get Duncans in the '62 as well.
