Hi,
does anyone know where can i get the scores for the more popular jazz tunes? free if possible :P

can be like fake book like tht but i'm planning to look more into the actual stuff, like the chords and tune.

if anyone has it and dnt mind scanning for me then i wld greatly appreciate it.

looking for wave and agus de beber, i guess the rest can wait :)

when you need the scores and play exactly like that, what's the point of playing jazz?

Fake book should be good enough.

well perhaps my take is tht at least i need to know how some stuff are played and learn accordingly.

an eg is tht i know how to make the melody of summer samba, so i jus fool ard with the some notes, jus changing here and there and it became totally new, giving it a refreshing touch.

but i do know wat u are trying to say thou :)

Come on man - if you really want to learn them the same way all the other jazzers do, then work them out by ear ;)

A jazzer sitting with a score?! Good God, you'll tarnish the jazz reputation with comments like that :)

????? tell tht to the players in blu jazz :)

whats wrong with playing jazz with scores? the threadstarter is trying to learn jazz, you gotta start from somewhere. Why criticise him?

To the ts,

Good luck in fidning the scores. Hope u succeed in jazz!

if you're trying to learn jazz, why not start with the scales?
i wanna learn too. but i don't understand the theory behind the scales.
haha.

scores

there is many things to check :
1) Do we need scores ?
We dont care if there are scores or not.
some pros use scores if they dont feel comfortable and some amateurs memorize everything.
Guess what is most important ????? the music played, ha ha

2) old tradition jazz musician complain that more and more young fellow ( even from berklee) tend to
read the scores of famous standards ppl used to remember before.
If u like musical wars u can go for that one...

3) In jam session ppl use the real book. Some use the fake book.
It has to be noticed that there are mistakes in all books, so a good musician i guess
is able to correct the mistakes of chords, signature etc..

4) even if u play by ear, it is advisable to read the music since some tunes are so fast that u can easily forget half of the notes. Of course u can say in jazz it is not important, but u will face the face of ur fellow musicians....

Focus on what is more important. The swing. Without that, bla bla bla....

nothing wrong with playing jazz by a fake/real book.

just go and buy from music bookstore. you should be able to find these at Borders or Yamaha book store.

of course.. the definitive fakebooks used by many jazz musicians aren't necessarily available in stores.. do a google search on "The_Ultimate_Fake_Book_(8500__Jazz_Sheets)" and see what u get..

I acknowledge your 'wink' emoticon, so won't flame you. :)

I'm learning jazz from a teacher. I use both my ear and also scores. Scores are useful for complex and fast tunes (which can be tough to transcribe) and especially useful for beginners who are not used to tunes that navigate more unusual chord changes and key changes. This helps the ear get use to melodies that don't just reside in one diatonic scale (normally the major) which most people are used to.

So no, although I'm not a jazzer yet (i am on the journey) one day, when I can say that something I produce sounds like jazz, I will also be guilty of not being like all the other jazzers whom Pianokris knows who worked them out by ear.

The Real Book is available at Kinokuniya. You must have not looked very hard because Jazz score books are VERY easy to find. :)

kekeke, i know i'll sound like a cheapo but my 1st post for the thread states Free if possible.

i saw those fake books gng for like $80+ i already faint liao. I already consider very long to buy instructional books at $30-$40, let alone something tht's double the price

yah man, got redirected back to here.

nvm then. thanks for the info, i'll go to esplanade later in the afternoon. thank you

I'm not sure why I can access. The link if for jazz fake books in the library catalog. Anyways, just go down to the esplanade to check it out.

wentthere and saw lots of books, even instructional too. was in a rush and jus grab one of the jazz fake books, when i got home, i realised all of them are in Eb :(

think will go to see got any in C or not cause easier to read :D

Hahahaaa....yeah, you gota be careful. Coz there are lots of materials for Eb (saxaphone and trombone, if I'm not wrong) and Bb (trumpet) instruments commonly used in jazz. :)

For C instruments, look out for keywords on the cover like guitar, keyboard and vocals.

my sight reading was trained in Bb last time, was a flute player in military band but i guess C wld be better for me now since i've haven't done sight reading for more than a decade

I was trained in flute too. But flute is a concert C instrument, not Bb.

Errhhh...did you mean that when you used to play the flute, the key of the songs are in Bb????

The C/Eb/Bb instruments play in all 12 keys including C, Db, D, Eb, E, F, etc etc. So, I think there might be some confusion to the type of instruments and the keys of the song.

Please check if the fake book that you borrowed is in the key of Eb or the fake book is for Eb instruments. If it is in the key of Eb but actually for C instruments, then there is no huge problem. You just have to learn to play in the key of Eb.

:)
