PS folks - I was kidding with my comment RE jazz 
It was flippant
of course I expect a beginner to use scores
when I teach jazz, I occasionally use scores
If I say something then put a wink beside it, just assume the complete opposite of whatever i'm saying
Two things you definitely will need to play jazz though - a big wooly jumper as worn by Herbie Hancock, and a beret
Honestly - if you get those things, you won't need any jazz lessons
