I realised there's a great difference between playing jazz triplet beats by youself and with a band. It's much eaiser to play at the triplet beat but a lot of improvisation and skill is needed when with a band.

Anyone have any comments on how to coordinate well with a band?

for jazz drumming i think you just gotta feel it. when you're practising jazz stuff it's very technical and that's why it's easier compared to with a band. you gotta play and jam more to increase your improvisation, and also how you gel with the band. for genres like punk and stuff, the whole music feel is just kinda one-way, but for jazz you can really sense the groove when you're playing.

imo.

Hi joshie

To learn how to play jazz, you will need to first begin by learning how to play the jazz triplet with the hihat going on 2 & 4. After that have got used to the movement. learn how to swing it. Buy books by John Riley, The Art of Bop Drumming & Beyond Bop Drumming to learn the left hand comping and brush techniques.

Listen to the many genres of jazz, e.g. new orleans, swing, bebop, big band, fusion etc. to immerse yourself in it and to eventually understand the music. Jazz is a very difficult typ of music to understand, as it is not as straight forward as pop and rock. Play together with the music to learn how to play with a jazz band, eventually you should be able to play it with your band.

My 2 cents worth....

i see... thanks a lot. hm.. what do you think of an acoustic set in a hdb flat? if i carpet the floor. i'm afraid i wont be able to paly if i get the set.

I have an accostic drumkit at home, and I haven't receive any complains from any neighbours yet. A few pointers:

1) place your drumkit on a thick carpet or sponge to reduce the amount of vibrations going to downstairs

2) try not to play at night

3) muffle your drums (even though i don't, I recommend that. I like my drums unmuffled)

4) use hot rods to play instead of drumsticks

cheers....

my fren double carpeted his floors and walls. And he close all windows and doors. So far no complaints. And i think he did it himself, doesnt cost as much. About the effects of the rm relative to sound, im not sure.

hey wait. so i basically keep to a triplet beat and introduce fill ins on and off consisting of triple's as well? could you fill me in on some fill ins (no pun intended) =)

joshie, you can say that. Do you know how to read drum scores? If yes, go and buy the 2 books that I had earlier mentioned by John Riley. There's lots of left hand comping exercises to learn from.

How much did you pay for the book wif shipping? Let mi guess...$25usd for shiping :? :? Plz tell me im wrong

p.s: Which 1 is better to get first?

The Art of Bop Drumming OR
Beyond Bop Drumming by John riley?

check out memphis at peninsula plaza. the guy said that he could help me order for 38.50 but it will come in in around 2 months. so you could order from him but it'll take 2months. haha.

probably the art of bop drumming. beyond bop drumming should be a continuation? haha im not really sure, you should ask BebopIggy.

Hmm... I was wondering if you guys know of anyways for a regular 4/4 beat drummer to step into the world of jazz.... How to get started? How do I master the know-how? I'm a poor kid down the block so I'd prefer to save my S-11 on bread than on drum books if possible... Ah-pek, care to teach a trick or 2?
