Jammin Studio - Minimum Standards

Hi Softies, just a quick survey - what kind of equipment (at least the basic acceptable standard) would you look for in a jamming studio (eg type of guitar amp, bass amp, drums, doubel peds? PA system keyboards etc). Also, what other factor do you look for in a jammin studio? All views r welcomed!

I suck at amp types, but I would appreciate a studio owner that is friendly and outgoing towards customers.

well decent room size... good PA for the vocals. no need 100Watt stacks la.. normal 1x12 peavey bandit should suffice for guitars.. a decent bass amp.. 1x15 nice keyboards.. and a synth on top of the keyboards... for piano/synth tones...
about 2-3 mics should be decent.

more impt to me would be room lighting... and comfort. and ofcourse size of the room.

hmm... u trying to do market survey ?? intending to open a studio of ur own ?? :P

anyway a studio with a decent drumset + decent guitar and bass amp + decent PA for vocals will do~ then will be consider a decent studio :D if there is enuff space, it would be nice to have a sofa inside the studio so at least can take a break and relax... then continue :)

nice PA, and basically any amp will do, i've given up hating the roland jazz chorus, and im beginning to accept it, haha

is it the one in wee lee jam studios? if thats the one i hate it too.
Must be big enough. got 2 decent guitar amps. which means no roland chorus. 3 mikes, decent bass amp. dun really need keyboard in my band actually. so dun care abt keyboard area.

I've never been to a jamming studio but based on my friends experience... location plays a part too. Today my friends wanted to go to this studio in sembawang but they couldn't find it. LOL.

size of the room and how they place the amp, sometimes due to the room size and the amp location,i must play right in front of the amp, very hard to check the sound balancing =)

nnn

sound balancing.. that is very important also. but how big the amp, will it be an advantage too?

Re: nnn

amp, depends on the room, bigger room get bigger amp =) but dun give the small cute" 10 watt amp la,hahaha

best is if everything is miced up like "soundmix" and you can hear everything clearly thru the PA. that is the BEST.

BTW soundmix if you hear this... the peavey really not nice la.. please replace with a fender princeton 65 or sumthing.. those amps rock...solid state too...

Well, it depends on what is your target market. If its for higher-end users, those who digs for space, 100 watt stacks, 100 watt bass amp, a nice drumset, a decent powered PA, good mics, etc. Check out places like Guitar77's, Wakemeupmusic. price ranges from $15-18/hr

if you're looking at cheaper rental, decent equipment, like mikemann's studio is more than enough. His rental rates are very reasonable, with a big room, decent amps, decent drumset, and everything. free iced water also!

location wise, you can say its important. Not only for you, but also for the users. Some of us carry our own gear, thus, if its a place that's difficult to go, it'd be very difficult for us to reach, and we'll most probably go for those easily accessible places. Eg. town area, but rental prices will vary from here too.

Last but not least, friendly people with smiles count a lot. Eg. Rui my man, haha..from G77, and the peepz at WMUM have one of the best ratings for the studios i've visited so far. Yupz...

p.s. i'm a consumer. not an advertiser. based on my experiences only. =)

yes

yes i agree with you, sumtime its hard to find a studio with sincerely smiling people n owners. One of em oso is Lee Kwong Seng Music Studios at Yishun, the aunty there is very friendly, sumtime treat u drinks n stuff. sumtime u finish late oso never charge xtra. No matter how far u from, as a consumer, they realli make u at home.

dont forget aircon. certain places got aircon but useless. they put there juz for decoration i guess. no offence

good nite. god bless.
thank you!!

air con

yes true, sum air con r 4 display i suppose. in e' end, must use fan.. than everybody get very sweaty n smelly... hehheheehhe

Re: air con

oh pls dun remind me.....i've been to these studios which have air cons for displays only......in the studio sweaty and smelly one thing....in the bus wah lauuu.....can;t even go dating after jamming....haha

i prefer studios which have rooms that are not too small......good sound....equipments that are always maintained.....friendly people....accessible, meaning easy to get there......price depends on the type of room and equipment...if its worth the price, i dun mind paying.....oh yeah., one last thing....studios which allow all types of music to be played....

anyway....its up to the individual/group/band.....not all will have the same taste and would prefer it in a diff way. not all guitarists will like marshalls or peavey.....and not all drummers will like gilbratar double pedals....and not all bands will like the spacious atmosphere if the sounding is echoic(there's such a word rite?) or small spaces(claustrophobic perhaps?)....but i think everyone agrees when it comes to maintenance....no matter what make the equipment is......if it works like its supposed to, its good enough.....

well, i was toying with the ideal of setting up a studio at my home. But I think the neighbours won't like it.
