is John Mayer really that good?

when it comes to chops and tone, there are a dozen players who are better than john. but they don't write witty lyrics like he does, and probably don't look as good.
take clay cook for example, he's the guy who co-wrote no such thing, comfortable and neon with john. but people hardly know him. you'll know why when you see his picture.

Personal inspiration!

John mayer is amazing! JOHN MAYER MARRY MEEEEEEEEE! :(

Haha actually I have to say john mayer is rather ugly, together with that constipated look when he does his solos and sort.

This man got loads of groove, feel and mojo!

I LOVE JOHN MAYER

Finally a John Mayer Thread

Man..i can't even begin how i learned alot of blues from this guy. Am a complete fan... Got his first album at 2000 and started listening ever since. Room for Squares,Heavier Things, Continuum, Try..

got his licks from Jimmy Hendrix,Eric Clapton an so on... by far the best cover of Hendrix's 'Bold As Love' i've heard...

All and all,he's surpassed the acoustic feel that he started with back in 2000. His rock-influence album, John Mayer Trio, named 'Try' definitely break new grounds when it was nominated early this year..

Looking forward to all the new music he makes...
Plus i've yet to own a John Mayer signature strat..Lol.(still a long way to go)

But cheers to all the John Mayer Fans!

Of course he is not as gd as many guitarist out there, cuz there r alot of better guitarist. BUt when it comes to blues, i dun look for technique or skill or wat they can do on the guitar 1st... i look for the feel.

There r tons of ppl who can play blues with all the cliche licks, but they r running thru them instead of playing with the heart n feeling the blues. Hendrix said, playing the blues is easy, feeling it is hard.

thats why i realli like buddy guy, he may not be technically superb, but he got that amazing gift to put a smile on ur face, n think where did that come from, or thats cheeky. N im not talking abt his showmanship, but rather when he just suprise u with a bend or a note u didnt except.

John Mayer i guess is famous first for his comtemporary stuff before he demonstrated his blues ability on crossroads festival, thats when imo was his big break as a blues player. So, he was already famous thats why its easier to gain fame as a gd blues guitar player as well.

personally, i was v suprised when i saw him play the blues, but he started playing blues bar at a young age. He has gd chops, n he really feels wat he is playing. Of course there is that srv n ec lick in there somewhere too, but the last 2 yrs he realli started finding his own groove, n thats gd.

Is he gd, yes he is. Is he realli that gd like wat other make it out to be? why shld it matter, as long as the music is fine?

In my opinion John Mayer is more of an all-rounded performer than a blues player.

There are definitely better blues players out there, but with a good tone, excellent voice and brooding looks and thousands of screaming girls, hes basically the benchmark for me. Someone who does what he loves to do and gets tremendous success in the mainstream....

If only shredders could get that kinda popularity too......

Oh yes 37 chords in a song. It rivals Dt and the like.

if you listened to his post trio stuff, u'd realise he's moved away from the rapid chord changes of room for squares. songs on continuum use fairly simple voicings and structure

and i'd love to be at his concert, getting surrounded by hot screaming chicks, woooo

id attend his concert if he came to singapore man ... If john mayer comes to SG... woah ... id take whatever VIP package there is.
im such a FAN.

actually, if you learn some of buddy guy's licks, you will realise that he combines the major and minor pentatonics *really* well.

his licks are also some of the hardest to do among blues guitarists too.

dont listen to late buddy guy. listen to when he was with chess studios, when he was young or when he played with junior wells. he was amazing back then.

yes, he does get a bit elastic, a bit messy, a bit notey, but there are some tracks where everything falls into place and sounds absoultely glorious :)

lol, when i read the part where u say dont listen to late buddy guy, i tot he just died or something ehehe. Yup i like the junior wells era in the 70s onwards.

I also like the way his rendition of many blues classics sound. I guess for buddy, its that combination of his guitar playing and showmanship, and when he starts singing, thats a whole different level alr!!!

Yup, it does gets abit messy at times, but where can u find the mojo thats equal? That raw feel of blues, and as to what scale he is playing, i dun really care cuz it just clicks right

i love JM because i feel he got the feel and that is rather important for playing music.

wished i had feel like Clapton or Hendri :(

Woooo.. John Mayall. That guy is REALLY REALLY that good. Love him!

John mayer has got some great playing chops. Influenced my playing quite a bit.

A great guitar player can be judged in many ways.
Guitars are not all about SPEED, SHRED and technicality.
imo, that's really not the point.

Nobody can ever point and say that eric clapton plays slow or BB king can't shred like yngwie.
It's a lot in the tone and the feel of their music and how the audience reacts to it.

:)
