Is it better to start off with the acoustic guitar

Hi everyone, First post in this forum. Planning to enter the guitar scene. Have zero experience with any type of guitar. Think u can probably guess why i'm planning to venture into this hobby due to my username ^^ I want to learn the electric guitar and went to check around a few shops today but they all told me that its better to start out with acoustic guitar. So then the story continues with me joining this forum... Okay so i have 3 questions to ask

1) Is it better to start off with the acoustic guitar and any particular reason for this?

2) For those of you who play the electric guitar, did u first start off with electric straightaway or acoustic first?

3) Is it possible to learn how to play the guitar by viewing free online lessons or must i go for classes? How many of u are self taught electric guitarists?

Srry for asking so many questions! I'm really interested in learning the guitar. Thx in advance!

Acoustic uses strings that are much harder to press, which makes your finger more painful initially but the calluses will develop. Acoustic is also better to start (imo) cause it's unplugged, just grab and play instead of EQing and all.
I started with acoustic for round about a year and some, before i got my first electric. Of course, you can start off with electric... That's a decision you'll have to make.
Yes, it's possible to learn online, with youtube and all that. However i recommend going for lessons-the teacher can point out what you're doing wrong and also show you firsthand what to do. I learnt basics from lessons, like basic chords, plucking, strumming, certain techniques, and some theory. After that it was on my own.

Exactly what he said about the acoustic guitar. I started off with acoustic guitar for about 2 years and got my first electric guitar after that. It definitely is possible to learn via youtube because that was what I did from the start, and just checking certain techniques with friends who were better than me.

However you will progress a lot faster with a teacher, but at that time my parents didnt wanna get me one, so I was on my own. It would be good if you get a teacher that would teach you some basics and theory, you would progress much faster.

As for me, I'm in classically trained in flute and piano, so musically wise, it wasnt too difficult for me.

no learn electric guitar striaght away look at yui hirasawa, newbie guitarist play electric guitar wahhh after 2 -3 yrs so good already. but she practice a lot

I played around with my friend's acoustic for a few weeks before picking up my own electric. I was just trying to see if my interest for guitar still persisted after the initial time period, but that ended up benefiting me because i already had some sort of finger strength and callouses.

I have been playing for around 5months now, and I learnt everything from the Internet. I started out with justinguitar.com - a really useful site. Try checking out the 'beginner's course' segment and after that, you should be able to play a couple of songs in just a month or so!

Thx everyone for ur help! Sadly i have no friends who are playing the guitar. So i guess i better buy an acoustic first. Do i have to get a tuner for a acoustic guitar and if i have to, is it the same type as the electric guitar type? Do any of u know any good, reasonably priced acoustic guitar courses around choa chu kang?

P.S. Likeui, R u a yui fan? She very pro, marks can improve from fail to 100

woowowow lol i'm like u... 0 knowledge but planning to start straight away into electric guitar... kinda dun like acrostic music lol

:D

for me i started playing with classical, followed by acoustic then electric.
so when i started to play electric,my fingers were already kindof hardened.but i really think that the electric is more easier to play compared to classical and acoustic.the neck of classical and acoustic guitars are fatter than electric ones.so if u start to play classical or/and acoustic guitar first, u will somehow find it easier to play when u are using a electric.also,if u start off with classical or acoustic,u will too find it easier when u pick up electric cos your fingers should be hardened after playing with classical or/and acoustic.

i support online learning IF you can really follow and understand what they are talking about. (save money for future use :x )
but its always good to get a teacher or someone thats skilled in playing guitar to spot and correct your mistakes.
i started playing the guitar by anyhow playing the songs i like on a classical guitar.i didnt know tabs, chords, scales and blablablah.
i only played melody of the songs.so it was kinda plain hahas.then i started exploring......
went to ultimate-guitar.com,youtube to search for guitar techniques so on and so fourth.
got to learn some stuffs from the internet! so i dont see why u cant learn guitar on the internet!:D
but after awhile i decided to look for a teacher because i really want to improve as much as possible and also to make sure that i was not playing anything wrongly.

all tuners are the same.can tune for acoustic, classical, electric etcetc.

as for guitar courses around cck.....
theres ossia at lot2 <---- the one beside lot1 :x never really checked the price before.but should be reasonable enough though.
yamaha at cck ite <------- err i dont think the price is reasonable for me.
sonata at teckwhye, next to chua chu kang.take 307 985 190 or 975 blablabla can le. price for the course is $90/month (individual),the teachers are good too :D

Thx for the reference! Yo u also live in cck? I live in teck whye. Got an acoustic guitar today. When i try to play a note, i find my fingers very stiff, not flexible. Is there any way to make my fingers more flexible?

our fingers don't get more flexible but rather, they get more used to the playing posture as we put in more playing time. play as much as possible, practice as much as possible; our fingers need to orientate themselves when it comes to playing.

I live in teck whye too xD
theres a way to warm up for drums,it kinda relaxes your hand muscles abit.so it kinda makes it easier to play with relaxed hands :x
i dont know if it works for playing guitar, sounds kinda silly though.
dunk your hands into a pail of warm water before starting on practice.
Works for drums, but im not sure if it works for guitar :o maybe i should try it out sometime :D
ohh! theres a warm up exercise that azunyan in k-on mentioned.i dont know if it really works too.
slowly stretch out your fingers one by one. should try it out .hahas :D

if u're using alot of strength to fret a string then u still need more practice. u just need to hold the note down hard enough that picking the string will not cause it to wriggle out of ur fretting finger.

the amount of effort used to press the strings down should be nothing excessive- just right. how do you know if this happens? as you play more often, you'd realize you can make the notes ring without trying too hard, especially if you play with friends who are more seasoned than you are. beginners tend to fret down hard because it's their perception that the more you do so, the 'better' your outcome would be.

Which part of teck whye u live? I live at teck whye lane. Lol the dunking in warm water method sounds kind of funny. U watch k-on too?

Btw have anyone tried the azunyan finger exercise? Is it effective?

play songs that have the chords u have problem remembering in them. if u have problem remembering all the chords, then learn a few songs that cover all the chords. there are technically only 2 open chords to remember...the C and G open chords. the others are barre chords that can be shifted up and down the fretboard.

and the buzzing sound occurs when u are not fretting properly so just check that u have actually fretted the note near the fretwire and just hard enough that it stays under ur finger when u pick the string.
