Not sure if this has been posted before.

http://www.liutaiomottola.com/myth/neckJointSustain.htm

Most guitarists claim that bolt on has the least sustain as compared to set neck and neck-thru joints. This might be opposite. I believe that the link only contains the abstract to the journal. i wish i could take a look at the whole journal...

The power analysis results suggest that the relationship between sustain and neck joint type is the reverse of the conventional wisdom on the subject. Longest sustain was associated with bolt-on necks and shortest sustain with neck through construction.

If I remember correctly, the primary advantage of set-necks are the increased sustain, though some prefer bolt-on necks because they're easily replaceable.

heh, reading so deeply into one of the many many different aspect of an instrument not healthy, even if its real

i dunno, just posting what i stumbled upon.

it would be interesting to find out that what you believe is not actually the case. i read somewhere else a while ago that the set neck joint were easier to make as compared to good bolt-on joints. Emphasise on "good". Which is why cheapo guitars with bolt-on neck joints generally do not sound good.

anyway there are so many variables in guitars that affect the sound, it would be extremely difficult to prove the truth. unless the sample size is really large, for the appropriate statistical testing to be done, and when the guitars are built and tested in extremely monitored and controlled conditions but that would cost such a large amount of money to start the experiment. in the end it's best to leave it to personal preferences.

i tend to move away from set necks due to the many horror stories i hear about Gibsons. I guess the safest but most ex might be set-thru (the combination of bolt-on, set neck and neck thru...)

Gibson? Well... I suppose we need a better set neck example. Just following the way Gibson has made their necks over the years... would really get you to cringe.

but of course. nothing sounds like a gibson. incredible branding i must say.

i agree with you completely. i've been trying to find a good Gibson LP substitute, that is not chambered, for a while now. Right now I guess the closest sound i can get is the Epiphone Elitist LP. Maybe one of the Edwards or something... I have to look more. after my exams.

i hope they actually do it~

someone should post this to Mythbusters, im not kidding..lol

There's definitely more outside. There are plenty of good guitar makers who have solid construction stuff. Look outside Gibs and Epis. You'll have to pay but this time round, its probably worth it.

Of course, if you are a collector then the Gibson is a nicer choice.
