Basically indie is the antithesis of what's popular in mainstream music. Like how "grunge" (which was a response to 80s "big hair, leather pants" heavy metal) was before it exploded into the mainstream market in the early 90's. More of a music culture than a kind of sound, which depends on what currently popular music sounds like.

I never understood why people are so interested in categorizing music. It seems an irrelevant pursuit.
I thought music was meant to be listened to and enjoyed.
