okay, i have decided that i wanna be like yngwie malmsteen (i sound crazy but ill try..) so i wanna pick up speedmetal. i know i must learn a lot of alternate picking and practice on a shitty classical guitar instead of an electric one. anything else i must know besides appregios and scales??

i'm not exactly a speed player ... but speed picking is all about repetitions. I guess you can start with developing your own melodic patterns .... can't run a minor scale all straight once through can ya?

And Malmsteen is very classically based player .... so mastering Classical pieces is fundementally essential ... that's one reason why i didn't go into that. :)

And maybe you can try learning the 7 modes of harmonic minor scale .... many genres of Classical utilises that scale. You can develop very interesting chord progressions too.

How about harmony theory? Malmsteen wrote an assemble for an entire Orchestra ... knowing the right chord progression is equally important ... that's when your music makes sense. Solos are just an accessory ... it's the fundementals of music that really counts. :)

Enjoy your expedition. :)

Hmm you got a wrong concept there brother. Typically in Metal playing style, those techniques mentioned above are nessesary, not just in the case of Malmsteen's neoclassical style. Also, practice on what you find is comfortable. Just cos Yngwie plays on a shitty classical and becomes a pro don't mean if you do it, you'll be good too.

You must not only know arpeggios and scales to be like Malmsteen, you need to know have plenty of experience and practice, and PLENTY of it. In any case, you may be able to copy his licks, but what about his feel and phrasing. Its something very hard to do, imitate exactly.

Just a thought...

Want to be like malmsteem? Well, practice accuracy + speed and in the context of yngwie, alternate picking.

I'm sure you can find lots of help online. ;)

Oh, you can start with electric straight away.

I think you are assuming that since malm plays neoclassical you should go classical guitar? Rather it should be you should go learn some classical music. Thats a good point to start. Classical music is both technical and soulful.. it is really a musician's music ( and please, don't bring up what Maksim ).

Anyway, a word of advice... too many ppl sound like malmsteem... and some of them are pure clones (joe stump), and some have gotten even more extreme than him. So yeah... it might do you a world of good to keep this in mind: be yourself.

old skool shred is dead!! go check out guitarists like marcel coenen, eklundh bumblefoot etc etc, way more interesting than malmsteen's music

hey guitarnoob... I would actually be wary of the statement you just made.

There is always a place for relentless shred, even if it seems to be mindless or what not. It is still a technical ability and it can be quite nice if used properly. A fine example is Jason Becker.

Also, I don't know whats in Yngwie's head but if you check out this mth's guitar techniques, he plays a very mean shred for a blues improv. Very mean and very interesting indeed. A pity his album material has degenerated into such boring drudgery...

I would respect a person for his skills when shredding... but when he starts to focus only on speed/technics, I lose interest. However, thats only in my opinion... and IMO, if you want to shred, please, take the extreme path, yngwie can be a platform for you to do some beginner shred.

Move on the Rusty Cooley or Franceco Ferrari. Take the extreme shred route!

yea man, be an extreme shredder!
although sometimes the stuff they put up doesn't remotely resemble music..

haha, if you read my post carefully, I didnt say anything like "malmsteen sucks" or "malmsteen cant play" etc etc...without him alot of guitarists wouldnt be what they are now. All I was trying to say was that there are guitarists whose way of shredding is more eye-opening than malmsteen's, eklundh, coming up with all the weird harmonics or coenen whose sweep tapping is like 8O..."óld sch shred is dead" what i meant was, after you discover all these new guitarists coming up with all this sickass techniques, man, malmsteen does get boring..anyway peace ^_^\/

ok the last part was gay

there is always a place for every kind of music. Every musician will always start off their learning curve emulating an artist. For Fenderrules ... emulating Malmsteen can give him a really good kick start learning the mechanics of the fretboard. But he shouldn't just learn how to play like Malmsteen ... but rather learn about scales and musicalities through his playing. And it's even advisable to explore into other guitarsts like what guitarNoob had mentioned. It's not about playing like anyone .... rather it's about what you can learn from that individual.

So for Fenderrules, it's a great idea for your initiative to learn malmsteen stuff, I'm sure you can learn alot from him ... but it would be great if you could try other guitarists too ... like LArry Carlton or Joe Pass. Some guitarists may sound simple ... but when you put it on pen and paper and you try to play like them ... you will find that malmsteen is not the best ... but merely among the best. Peace. :)
