i agree with u mic-abuser....... super punk is only 'good' facin the monitor to talk... i dun even think he owns two balls to play sumtink beta own. he's only 'great' at speech wise(which is behind scenes)

please dont say until like that, whoever goes on stage, earns my respect. If they sound great, I will enjoy the show. If they dont sound that good, I will clap harder to encourage them.

people have their comments. and it's their comments that make the bands improve. anyway, i respect all the bands that play on stage. Cos the admission fee for the bands is freaking EXPENSIVE!!!!! chezz man.... anyway, no matter what.. most of the bands are not bad. for example, project liquid's guitarist, Omar, is really really good. His techniques never fail to amaze me since that day i saw him play at planet paradigm. I like dr.Rhy a lot cos of their showmanship and attitude on stage. It's like watching a comedy sketch. Though i cant really hear the second guitartist, i heard that there was something wrong with the sound systems then. Still, their costumes is really funny. check out the vocal BABOK!!! haha....

Dr. Rhy, Bay Area Rock Blaster, Project Liquid, Kai 'O' Was, Shakespear is the brightest band in this competition. I heard the guy that SilverSweets mention from Project Liquid is the one who won the 'Best Guitarist' at Yamaha Asian Beat Band Competition last year... Congrats..

if i clap harder to encouragement crappy bands. i'd be clapping a lot. i'd clapping to linkin park, limp bizkit, britney spears, justin timberlakeand korn and bon jovi. i'll be clapping for hours until my hands bleed.oh yeah i'll also be clapping for birded.

Enuf Talk! Let's all not be talking behind monitors! Want to come out and play??? It's been a long time since I played music. Aching to do so. I sing well. I play guitar & piano. No cert, not lessons, but just started ABRSM. Shld be getting grade 8 cert next year, my teacher said. Hmm, sorry for that defensiveness. Sigh, S'pore always look for cert. Can't even go play for concert if got no cert. :p Heck, can't even play on streets if got no cert (to show I'm handicapped, physically or mentally).

Come on, everybody! Let's rock. I do the more melodious songs (no 3-note scream fest melodies, please). I can arrange songs, a capellas, (no, can't arrange drums). I think I have some weird talent with "chords". I don't know chords, but I can do it very well. Now that I've started learning piano, I realized I've been doing LOTS of "borrowed chords" & "altered chords". Teacher said I got great (functioning) ears.

So how? Anybody wants to play?

benefits of ibx...

2. the club might notice u and make u perform regularly in the club
3. someone else might notice u and mebbe u can become famous and make lots of money
4.HOW famous and HOW much money? ahh...u will be polished and refined and marketed in the S.E.A region...go figure
5. IF u make it to the international finals, u get to compete alongside with bands frm Malaysia, Phillippines and Indonesia..enough exposure already?
6. IF u beat all those bands and become THE champion, MIG records will sign u on as their artiste and u will be further polished and refined and marketed to be an international star.
7. IF the other bands beat u instead, u might get noticed by the several representatives of other record companies who think uve got wat it takes to be an international star.
8. Other gigs/comps dun really offer internatioanl recording contract as their coveted prize
9. Other gigs/comps dun help finalists with their image and performance before the competition
10. This is the first competition of its kind in Singapore...so be proud to be part of the alumni batch...plans ahead for this to be an annual affair..
Further enquiries? Msg me and i give u my number...this one must slow talk ar..
adios amigos brambos

by the way, i'm not condemning other comps/gigs aight...its good to have many comps so bands can improve their skills and have many avenues to showcase their talents and abilities..
ibx is just helping these talents to be noticed not just locally but inernationally.. :D
for a small country, we have a large talent pool...sad to see if it all goes to waste.

jon...join ibx la..then we can all know your talents..make ur teacher proud...muahahhahaha

Yes, I would like to join. How to? Will it stretch till after August 2004? Where r the details?

I haven't been playing for long, so nobody to play with. Do I need a band? Anybody wants to form a band? Like I said, I write music very well (except drums), so I can scrape up a repertoire for the band rather easily. Or can we do covers?

What kind of music? I used to do ballads from metal groups (Guns & Roses, Scorpion, etc). Only problem is, I dun do much digital sound effects (new-age requirements?). I sing well (scream less well), but mostly for old-school music (like wat u see on American Idol). Used to do lots of Chicago (Peter Cetera).

Come on, somebody please join up and play with me?? :) No pressure on u, I promise. Let me do the singing & playing 1st. I'm easy-going guy, with a very strong knack for being CONSTRUCTIVE even with criticisms. Just have fun & learn from each other.

yo Jon!!!!! u are super correct!!! super punk can only "show" his talents behind the monitor!!!! lol!!!! i dun even think he have the guts to go close to the stage's stairs... btw....u r rite. spore only need certs to be ard... shit!! but hey...if u r planning to join ibx, inform me. i'll go n support. see u in the semi finals!!!

dear JON..lemme break it down for u..
1. OF COURSE u need a band...wanna know why??? coz its a BAND COMPETITION!!!!! yeayyy!!!! *sigh*
2. u can do covers, u can bring ur originals...if u go finals..then must be an ORIGINAL.
3. this competitoin will stretch till end if the year.
4. NO SPECIFIC GENRE : play wat u want...no pre recorded mixes/sounds...only live music.
5. NO AGE LIMIT

ouh...one more thing...if u read the webbie carefully, there will instructions on HOW TO REGISTER... send in ur applications to embassy ok.
#dun mind my typo...fingers going crazy in this blistering heat!

Juz posted up what I thought of up on my blog, and here's a copy of what I wrote:
IBX in SG

First up kudos to the bands that played. 2nd of all I checked out some of the clips from from SOFT

2nd part, guess I'm gonna be a music police....this is straightly from a musician's point of view, no hatred or trying to put down anybody here.

First of all, I believe that if there's gonna be a vocalist, than the vocalist is of vital importance because s/he will be holding the melody and the rest of the band will only be backing up the vocalist, therefore if the damn vocalist can't keep pitch(unless if its like a nu-metal when the vocalist is rapping and not doing much singing or the band is like a black metal band) no matter how strong or tight the band is, it will still sound like crap. Apparently some of the vocalist can't keep pitch, especially when going up higher or lower, they seem to not be able to hit the note correctly, it is also important to choose a key that the vocalist is comfortable singing in. Btw juz for your info, if ya listen to screamers like Slayer, Sepultura although unbeliveable they do scream in pitch.....

Next up, I notice on some of the videos when ya'll are doing solos, its a bit hard to hear, what might help is to use some sort of pedal to boost your volume, so when you are taking a solo boost it, that way the audience will be able to hear you, on stage you might think its loud but off the stage its totally different. Or the other way, which I dun prefer to do cuz its not the best way is to use your volume knob, set up so that your guitar volume is say around 5 or 6 and when taking a solo turn up to 9 - 10.

Last part, I will talk about is the drums and bass, they are the back bone of the band, if they dun play well, the whole band will fail. Drums and bass muz be really tight, not some thingI can see(or rather hear). And defintely keep time, the drums muz be rock solid like a drum machine, ok I know we are humans and probably will make mistake but try to be as solid as possible

Over and out
Long ranting sorry bout that

Don't know how they got the recording, but it's probably thru the phones on the camera.
If that's the case, usually what you'll hear is just the sound of the vocals, since mics used on cameras are usually focussed mainly on capturing those. So what the viewers will hear is usually something that has a low shelf and very centered on what is being sung. Since it's a metal thing, most of the vox is just going to be hiding behind the music, which is why the singer might not know he's out. Prob at the venue, they'll think it's perfectly fine. On solos, if the desk has the amps all miked up, they're not likely to raise the levels on the guitars. Either that or the amp isn't even miked up, so it just sounds great to the band but sucks on camera.
In the end, what you hear at the gig is prob very different from what's on tape. that's sound for you.....

True, which is y my teacher always tell us to actually go out to where the audiences are and listen to the sound there and not from the stage cuz its totally different, try not to be too dependent on the sound engineer.
