haha... so so true man. i know exactly what you mean. doing the research and window shopping can be even more fun than actually playing with your new toys

hey MrE - yep, cost is quite the factor for me too. thash why i thought the ibanez might be the cheaper alternative. but dunno yet, cos SL hasn't priced it yet. the other way was to consider the Mesa F series but non-availability and cost is the deterent here. plus i dunno how it sounds..
will do some more window shopping and research before i decide i guess. anyways, all things are with more spirit chased than enjoyed...hehe.

there's an F series for sale 2nd hand at luther classads. i tried it before. believe it hasn't been sold yet.

subversion: multiple wattage amps have been introduced by Mesa, but few people get those amps due to the price factor. there's also the pentode/triode amps from other companies but they don't come as close as multiple wattage.

having said that most amp circuits tend to be optimized for a certain wattage - inherent design issues there.

try out more stuff first i guess. i'm not going to go into the watt issue, but it is true in general that you can push a lower wattage amp tubes harder at lower volumes. the drawback is that you tend to have much less headrooms on lower wattage amps. There just really isn't a lot of tube amps for you to try out in Singapore retail shops, unfortunately, not even the large 50/100W stacks etc. Presumably because consumers here tend to spend much more on guitars.

You could look out of Singapore, but yea, buying w/o testing can be a big factor.

fibredrive i hav not tried the ibanez head yet but im kinda waiting for the carvin v3 instead..http://www.carvinworld.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=V3&CID=V3A

as others had mention ,its tough getting cabs in sg..hence
im using a laney combo 120watts via fx loop for the speaker section .

perhaps in the future i might get a couple of crate 1*12 for stereo operation.
Like u i adore the engl, its a gem but a tad too xpensive for me..
for engl tone i use my podxt instead..:)

hey penguin,

the v3 looks like a serious contender. but think by the time it comes to sg my 2nd kid would be doing his o levels most prob...ok i exaggerate...heh

i use pod xt live too, so you got the expansion pack as well? my fav combination is recording the engl and dual rec'fier 4 times over and panning them hard left/right. gives me a beautiful wall of gutsy ballsy mayhem...kekeke. think the expansion rocks!

was thinking of getting the 2nd hand f30 or peavey triple xxx 112 combo. think the JSX might be off limits for me considering the price now. still waiting to hear how much the thermion costs. they haven't priced it yet...sigh.

Actually if u have the chance to grab one, get a rivera R30. The Mesa F30 uses EL84 tubes, tone wise its very different from 6L6s you find in the XXX.
