How would you know where to put string trees?

Let's say I've got a strat neck without any string trees, is it ok to be without the trees? Or where do you put them? Randomly?

If your strat does not come with string tree from factory ...then it doesn't rquire any ...coz nowadays slimmer neck profile after nut is achiveable compared to before ....

The purpose of a string tree is to deviate the angel of the string from nut before it meets the tuner peg so no slippage is achieved.

Depends on your landscaping.. *Laughs madly* :smt081

Ahem.. Seriously, like what gsonique said, if it didn't come with one, it probably doesn't need it.. Unless you're having problems with the string popping out of the nut (*laugh madly again*), which I don't think is very common.. Placing it isn't really an exact science.. I usually just use other guitars with string trees as a rough guide.. As long as there's sufficient pressure on the nut (*controls himself*) it should serve its function..

Well, they do help in tuning stability. See, if the downward force of the strings on your nut (*I'm starting again*) isn't enough, there'd usually not be enough tension to keep the string from warbling (changing pitch) when you pluck it hard. You'll notice that a G string (*cracks up*) for example seems to have a little less tension without a string tree than with. Whether it's perceived or not, I'm not sure, but in my own experience, it seems so..

I'd better stop before I make any more crappy, oblique innuendos..
