How to tune my guitar?

Hi everyone.

Im actually decided to self learn guitar just for fun & de-stress. Bought a 2nd hand TGM V2 acoustic guitar not too long ago.

But I'm quite confuse in how to tune my guitar right. Although there are some guidelines online with mp3 file, but im just totally lost when tuning left or right sounds actually the same to me..

Is there anyone can advise me or share experience?

Thks!

hmmm... do you use a tuner? I myself is quite pitch deaf, so I depend on a tuner to tune my guitar.

*off topic* why don't you get yourself a gibson robot guitar that tunes itself? ok thats seriously bad advice...

No, haven't bought myself a tuner yet. Any recommendation? Brand and where to buy from?

Actually just wanna self learn to have some fun. Tat day happen to know there's a 2nd hand guitar cheap selling, so bought to have a try without heavy investment.

If later on i could pick up, will consider to buy a better guitar.

Tuners doesn't help train your ear. Tuning your instruments with your own ears are much more satisfying for me at least.

Well, for a beginner like the TS, who is figuring out how to tune his guitar right, using a tuner is a good way to start off.

Thks everyone for the advice & comments. I will buy a tuner asap then. Hope can pick up guitar playing really soon. :)

hm..

actually if u are concern about tuners as in which brand to buy and stuffs not to worry for ur usage anything is about the same.. juz that some tuner comes with metronome and some even with chords dictionary so i will suggest u get one with the dictionary since u'r new. also u could seek advise from the sales person on how to use it.. welcome to the world of guitar! do pick it up dun give up it's a great instrument. :)

one important advice: get a chromatic tuner which can tune any note. getting a tuner that can tune only the 6 open notes in standard tuning (E3 A3 D4 G4 B4 E5) is too limiting for futureproofing. In no time you will be using non-standard tuning such as drop D or open G, so a chromatic tuner is the way to go

Very true! hearing is important.. if u dun learn to tune the hard way, how are u being able to 'tangkap'/learn songs that u want by ear right?

Get a tuning fork and a tuner. Manually tune using the tuning fork, then verify with the tuner.

One thing beginners always missed out is tuning the guitar before actually playing. Make it a habit to tune first. After a while, you'll get used to the "tune" and will be able to tune by ear.

For my case, I always tune my guitar according to song like here without you by 3 door downs. LOL.

Haha I remember the first time I tried tuning my guitar, it was a mess and there weren't any definitive guides out there and back there, no forums to ask for help either.

I second the suggestion of getting a tuner. Learning to tune by ear and all is good advice, but it can be very daunting for a beginner and might actually discourage the poor fellow. There are many kinds of tuners out there, but I think one of those clip-on tuners would be ideal. They don't cost much, and most of them have specific 6 string tuning for the guitar, as well as the chromatic mode.

The first string, that is the thinnest string, is your high E. So standard tuning would be 440,

E - first string (thinnest)
B
G
D
A
E - Thickest

Hope this helps!
