Hi

I just got a TGM strat. I love the thing and has a comfortable neck. But I noticed that the tuners are different in a way that the hole is facing vertically! Normally, I`m used to seeing guitars with the holes facing horizontally.....so I would like to know, if I wanna change strings in the future, how do I got about installing strings in these weird tuners in the correct way?

Thanx

These are slightly tricky to change. These are "vintage tuners", similar to some of those jazz bass copy guitar too. Here is a rough guide:

1) start with an empty neck
2) adjust the tuners so the slot is straight with ref to neck
3) put on the 1st string
4) pull till it reach the tuner slot and give it another 6-7cm slack
7) cut away the excess
8.) poke the end of the string into the "hole"
9) pull to the top and mount the string onto the shaft (1/2 clockwise)
10) maintain some pressure and start tightening the tuner
11) when string gets tension go on to the next string (step 3)
12) tune up your guitar and ready to go.

A good guide will be you have about 2-4 turns on the shaft when fully tuned.

If you still having problem, just pop by one of these days at my studio, and purchase a set of strings from me. I'll show you how to put them on.

milkemann,

it is best to show some pictures or photographs of the steps. changing string need experience and to start of with, always consult the person whom you buy the guitar from, or teachers/lecturers teaching you. You can also consult any of the guitar vendors.

Personally, I like those 'split post' vintage tuners very much - at least the split post part. The actual tuning gear mechanisms I found weren't so stable on one of my early Strats. The advantage of these is that the sharp string end is neatly hidden in the hole so it can't poke anyone, and once you have inserted the string and bent it sharply and pulled tight to the post, there is no chance of a loose string loop which can be annoying in the first couple of days with new strings going out of tune.

ha i simply dig those music man style '4 by 2' tuners, pretty classy i think... now if only i got the dough for an axis or supersport..
