how to create the relic look??

Naw. Won't work that effectively on poly-coated guitars. I assume that your strat is, no?

Don't attempt it cause it will look amateurish til you perfect the art on cheaper guitars.

What you can do to the hardware such as the knobs and the pickguard though, is to soak it in hot strong tea for some time. Read this from thegearpage.com and attempt at your own risk!

you can't relic a poly coated guitar.

it will look like crap.

1) you can't check the poly like nitro
2) you can't wear the poly off using sand paper etc etc, you will burn the wood underneath before the poly sands off. You will find burn marks after u use a heat gun and strip the paint off.
3) fretboard/neck is poly coated, it won't age like a nitro board, you will never get to the wood.

The poly is there for a reason, to protect against scratches/wood chipping/wood damage.

The only thing u can 'relic' is the hardware.

i tried it out on a prev jackson i had.i simply sand the finish slightly adn put over like abt 2 more layers then sand it agn.so there will be patches of the
colours underneath

personally i think Heavy relics are... easily over done.. and can kill the MOJO involved all together.

light relics can be achieved by

1 - Very light sanding to reduce the shine of certain wear areas.
2 - Deliberate pick scratches
3 - forearm wear, sand lightly thru the finish.
4 - Ding ding ding.
5 - Buckle rash. (Always wear a belt when you play, big spiky buckles help)
6 - Do not polish/clean the guitar. Period.
7 - Aged plastic parts.
8 - Tarnish tuners and bridge. (Autosol - for used matte finish.)

you can even remove all the hardware and neck. Leave the guitar body exposed to the sun with the pickguard attached for the exposed/un-exposed contrast ...,
Rub dirt on it and kick it around the floor abit... for that dirty look.

Or you could just.. play it everyday for 10yrs and don't be so careful.

Hmm.

^^ Haha... yeah well personally my guitar (G-400) is starting to look pretty "used" because I pretty much play 5/7 days of the week AND I use a metal pick.

Also I love to jump about, but my room has limited space.. so oh wells

Leave the guitar at the corner of the room, no casings, no stands etc...

Mine starts to trade paints with the wall of my room... can see different whitepaints on my guitar.. and my strat is white too...

the relic treatment u gave are more towards nitro coated guitars.

his is a poly coated, sanding it won't really help. you won't manage to sand through the poly.

there is one way, u lend me ur guitar now and ill have it back to u in a few years with the relic-ed look. wat say you?

U ll proobably return with only the neck and some pots...

actually... sandpaper can sand thru poly quite quickly. I satined a poly coated neck
- took me only 2 mins to accidentally hit bare wood.

poly coated guitars can be reliced - really epends on whether the guy doing it know show...
... but the best results naturally come from thinly finished nitro guitars.. and players who really make full use of their guitars.

hey guys,i got a cheap ibanez grx40, i wanna sand it to get a satian finish.
i dunno my guitar is poly or nitro coated
how to start with?
