How to analyze music?

Cold static, the link is broken. And I get what you are suggesting. There are software out there that "analyses" music - mathematically or electronically. It will churn out things in numbers, tell the chords etc. But that's not what pf is talking about here.

Analysing music needs a human, and there can be different interpretations as well. It basically answers the question, "What does this piece of music mean?"

Pf, come to think of it, it's not going to be easy to come up with a quick answer here. Best way is to SHOW how to do it by actually analysing a piece. Let me have a think about it...

Hahaha ... pf, what do you EXACTLY mean by analyzing piece?

for me who is trained in Analysis class, analyzing a piece means a very methodical way of explaining a classical piece, setting it up to a structure, analyzing the harmony, motif repetition, and setting it to composer's intention, trying to read the composer's mind .. and all those complex stuff.... and there is even a more complex stuff that i don't even interested to learn, luckily i didn't took my Bachelor in music so that I don't need to do that module... very scholar like ... "schenkerian analysis" ... urgh ...

Oh yes....after a little google, I realised that there are sooooo many ways to analyse music. From the amaturish type to the really scholarly type!!!

I was asked by my church friend on his music analysis essay (very simple one like describing how the music should sound like from the tempo, key signature, etc) for music theory class in church like 10mins before lesson.

Stunned me leh......hahahaha...coz he's Grade 3 and I'm not even scheduled to take those lessons yet!
 
you can also analyze the audio production of the music by running it through a spectral analyzer, and comparing it to the results of other musical pieces. There's a list somewhere of the fft diagrams of famous hits.

really good stuff. i especially love aphex twin's spectral diagrams. Very consistent.

btw pf, grade 3 analysis should be still a simple child-story like =) ... just describing the piece ... hehehe

Another assignment I heard is to watch and analyze choir singing and orchastral music. Somebody ask me if I have such a VCD to lend for the assignment. Unfortunately, my offer of the Nightwish VCD was rejected.

hehe if you're talking about music analysis a la the lower level academic stuff, spectral analysis is not in it. But, besides using it to judge music productions as a whole, you might use it say as a tool to analyze how a composer selects sounds and juxtaposes them against each other to achieve ....... what usually sounds like too much reverbed prepared pianos =)
 
I started analysing music when I got interested in songwriting. How they add "things" here and there to suit the mood and emotion for the certain point of the song. I listen to the guitars, keys, bass, drums and etc carefully, and hear how they do their part for the song, and tried to imagine what will happen if the keys, guitar or etc is removed, will the song still sound the same and etc.... I started to learn abit abt bass, keys and drums playing (i'm a guitarist) so that it help me understand the other instrutments better, their roles and limitations. it helps me understand better and gives me a better "analysis". Thats' my take on analysis of music
 
to analyse a piece of music(assuming it's complete) i need to determine the key of the piece, and where it cadences/modulates, what key it modulates to, and where it returns to tonic and -whatever- other musical elements is involved. Then i can determine what formal structure the piece is in (sonata/suite/whatever).

and then i answer questions pertaining to the analysis zzz.

What if the piece is atonal/dodecaphonic/some other system not based on standard diatonic harmony?

good point, haven't really thought about it yet.

but perhaps for atonal (or rather 12 tone) melody i would first identify all 12 notes and their sequence, then look out for the inversion/retrograde/inverse retrograde... then i'm stuck >"<

i'm still learning to do deeper analysis. =X
