Yep there was a time when I call it Eye-Bains too haha, but then I realized that Ibanez was based on Japan, so technically the hiragana will be いばねず or katagana (if you prefer) イバネズ, hence the pronounciation 'eee-bar-nez' to me :)

... but the Ibanez brand name dates back to 1929 when Hoshino Gakki began importing Salvador Ibáñez guitars from Spain. When the "Salvador Ibáñez" workshop was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, the "Ibanez Salvador" guitars were no longer available, so Hoshino Gakki bought the "Ibanez Salvador" brand name rights and started making Spanish acoustic guitars in 1935, at first using the "Ibanez Salvador" brand name, and then later using the "Ibanez" brand name.

We ought to start a thread on the correct way to pronounce music stuffs, be it brands or whatever.

Yup! Ibañez, as bro hecklerkoch mentioned, is a Spanish name and is basically pronounced as eee-ban-nyez.

Yep, that's right. That's the prooper way the Spanish would pronounce it. So why was it mentioned somewhere here that it's no "ee" but "eye"? :???:

Ibanez is a Japanese brand,

I think it should follow the Japanese way of pronouncing the "I" which is pronouced "eee"

It is juz like the camera brand Nikon. (pronounced Nee kon not Nai kon)

It's complicated cos it's a fact that Ibanez is a brand that's fully Japanese-owned but the full name was Salvador Ibanez and it was a brand of guitars originating from Spain.

i really wonder why people put "it's complicated" in their profile in social networking sites? it's either single or married/in a relationship.

Agreed with Hobbes234. It is a Japanese brand even though the name originally came from Spain. All the designs and features of the guitars are still by Hoshino Gakki, so the brand is pretty much his. Not sure what happened to the Spanish aspect, but I've thought several times that Ibanez doesn't sound like a Japanese name, but then neither do ESP, Warrior and Caparison.
