has anyone like work a credit deal with family members? (hey mum, you pay for my $3K Les Paul, i'll pay you back in $10 instalments, can?)

Strat and amp was bought by parents. My >>>RG1077xl<<< paid by saving, working and subsidaries and selling all my little nicknacks.

Normally when I have a bonus or something like that I might splash out on a new large item, but generally can buy most things I want at any time of the year. Additionally, my hobby has been reasonably self-sustaining over the years - selling something on results in some cash that I keep in a pool to fund other purchases.

Last time when I was still studying i did the saving up and do the buy and sell thing. Now am working with a relatively ok pay so buying stuff as long as not super big ticket items is ok,

True that. But I was referring more to how he can maintain a constant pool of cash to fund his hobbies by selling stuff along the way. That's a consistent flow of profits man..yikes..hehe
