how do u remove the metal pickup covers of a humbucker?

Hi BinforChrist,

You can remove the covers one of two ways:

1. A high power soldering iron to melt the solder, or

2. a saw to cut through the solder, usually a dremel electric drill with the disc attachment.

If you are desperate and lazy, you can remove them using a flat blade screwdriver to break the solder. This way the nickel covers are damaged and can't be reused.

Removing the covers increases the gain (why guitarists in the 70's removed them on Gibsons), but makes the pickup noisier.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Mark.

oh..noise?arent humbuckers supposed to 'buck' 'hum'?

sorry, i'm a noob on certain things..

increase gain eh?btw with the covers on will it make the sound more bassy?

btw dongara, thx for spelling out my name in full :D ..

Humbuckers 'buck hum' but the electronics will still pick up noise from the surrounding (the hiss we hear, rather than the hum) electrical devices.

Yes the sound will be more bassy with the covers on and more trebly with them off.

No problem about the name.

cheers,

Mark.

If you're in strictly for looks, try messing around with the covers once you've removed them. Maybe you can create one of these works of art too. (pics from BKP website) :smt003

before you even think of "distressing" the pickup with covers on...

Remove the pickup from cover first and then burn, dip in acid, vinegar, ammonia, bleach, let your dog chew on it, tie it to your bike and ride around the whole block and whatever to the cover.

Remove the pickup cover!

Also when installing back... make sure you have a little pot of melted wax, be it candle, paraffin, beeswax etc. install the cover back, solder and then dip the whole mess into the melted wax until you see no more bubbles.

Details on how to pot a pickup... www.google.com

Its not difficult to do but do practise some SAFETY common sense. Molten wax can BURN and cause bodily harm.

cheapo pick ups or upmarket - once took the cover off an "Orient" Les Paul copy - turned out it was a single coil in the metal cover

Excercise caution ... easy to eff up the job a ruin a perfectly good pup

That will be quite a thing of the past as in P.A.S.T., nong nong time ago. Not good to alarm the easily impressionable youths of today.

I strongly believe any current "orient" humbucker pickup will be a humbucker.

true - the Orient hum I worked on was about 15 years ago....

BTW do they still make Orient guitars? I remember the one I worked on - plywood, immitation hum, crap tuners etc etc....BUT had nice violin burst finish

i read it as ORIENT = Oriental made guitars.

Don't know about the current status of "ORIENT" guitars.

yep I'm talking about the brand name "ORIENT" - judging from its quality I guess it was definately 80s Oriental made...

I wudnt recommend them

my old 70's aspen les paul had a single coil in a metal cover as well, everything else was great though.
