High gain to low gain during a song

Hey guys!
Just a question about switching from high gain to low gain during a song.
Do you guys use a
1) Volume pedal
2) 2 different distortion pedals (1 for high gain, the other for low)
3) Have a distortion and overdrive setup before hand, turn off your overdrive when you wanna play low gain

i use an OD pedal and a pedal switch for my amp's drive, so i guess its number 2?

Guitar volume knob does it for me

A mix of 2 and 3 but more of 3

i use an MXR dist+ with the rubber grips on the knobs so i can tweak it with my toes.
