Hi, hv been playing for 2 years now using an RG370B with duncan distortions.. play mostly rhythm with some soloing, sorta like greenday and the like... thinking of getting a fender strat (either highway one or fatstrat) or Ibanez SA320X.. which one is more recommended? I kinda like the piezo on the SA320X, an was planning to get acoustic guit anw, so it'll be like killing two stones with one bird... Budget is $1100 max.

TIA

imho, if u want a strat, u should go for a mij one. the price diff b/w the mij and the highway1 might be ennuf for even a pickup change. so it might be better value for money :D

soundwise the strat and the RG should be worlds apart.

go try it out at swee lee before even deciding what type to buy. the highway 1 is made out of alder body , giving it a brighter classic fender tone. If i m not mistaken the fender highway 1 strat sports alnico pickups. the MIJ fenders , especially the cheaper range ones going at about 800 , feature basswood bodies, which give it a more neutral bias towards the tone. the fender japan strats sport either fender japan pickups or vintage reissue pups. that being said , alder makes the sound bright , basswood is neutral.

if you plan to heavily mod the stratocaster and change alot of things , would recommend the fender japan strat primarily for the fact that it has a basswood body, allowing the pickups to come through more "naturally" not artifically bright

Green Day has more rythm..if you really want green day..get the epiphone Semi -hollow..Jason white of green day uses one..IMO it sounds good too..but i think Hamer at citymusic got some value-for-money guitars..like the echotone.

which MIJ?
Aerodyne is more expensive than highway1

hmm.. thx for all e quick replies.. all of you seem to be veering towards the fender, what about the ibanez (which im more inclined to)?

the SA320X is 'different' investment since it features a piezo system in there. however, the default pickups aren't fantastic but definitely acceptable.

the strat option is also very thoughtful- since your Ibanez excel in humbucking tones, why not get a single coil equipped guitar for tonal variation?

popeye :: er, just the standard ones, like the ST-43.

ibanez wise, not too sure. but as stars says, they sound worlds apart. i suppose u gotta ask the ibanez pros around here, someone like shredcow. also, u might wanna go and read reviews on whichever model u're interested in, a good website for that would be harmony central.

I guess there is no better person to ask about Ibanez and Seymour Duncan in this forum other than mr Subversion :D

I personally feel that the piezo system works best if you run the signal into an acoustic amp. More "natural".

Consider the strat man. It's not like you're gonna have 2 amps to play with everyday.

thx again for all your replies... well, i've got both an acoustic and electric to play around with, so the amps are not really the matter... what i wanted was the flexibility offered in the ibanez.

what's the difference between rosewood and maple fretboards as offered in the strats?

and it is feasible to add piezos into my rg? how much would they cost?

rosewood fretboards (in fenders particularly) give a warmer midrange. maple ones give you a more pronounced treble.

lol.. tried e ibanez at sweelee 2dae.. e neck's nice, bod's nice, piezo's nice.. but the stock pu's NOT NICE! hafta change.. lol. very the muddy...
