Help:
VHT S6 Ultra Combo
or
Jet City 20w Combo

Which is better for high
gain and bedroom playing?
Using distortion pedal btw.
So do i need that much gain
from the amp?
Which have better cleans?

Need opinions. Getting either
one on this weekend...

If you intend to get your cleans out of the amp, the VHT might suit you better. Although the JCA20w combo can get quite a bit of clean headroom, just have to swap the tube in V1 to a 12AY7 to lower preamp gain so that your amp doesn't overdrive so fast.

But ultimately, it's up to you. The Jet city has a more marshally sort of cleans, while the VHT has more fender-y cleans both have their own distinct characteristics.

However, the Jet City is meant to be a high gain monster, so using it for cleans.. a bit wasted

I need the cleans for my pedal.
Jet city have nice panels. But
too much tubes. 3preamp, 2 el84
and 2 for reverb.
Means that if im using a pedal n
dont need much gain from the amp,
i just get the VHT?

The no of tubes in an amp doesn't determine how clean it is. You have to take the circuit into consideration as well. In the end, it's a matter of what flavour of cleans you prefer

Haiyo! Im a noob... Paiseh lah wanna
go there to test! Haha! Im getting a Vox
Tonelab ST. So im not sure the Jet City
or the Vht will suite better. If a good
clean is good for the base of distortion
den wat makes a slight dist with a dist
pedal? I think i'll get the Vht combo. No
point i buy amp with high distortions but
im using a distortion pedal right? Furthermore
the Jet City's 7 tube will cost more than
my bike's tyre if its faulty. The Vht only
have 1x power and 2x preamp and i cud
get a good RCA and JJ's for a few $$. =>

It's hard to do this kind of comparison justice, since it's between a 6-watt and a 20-watt. It's true that Jet City amps are geared towards distortion more than anything else, but for bedroom levels, it actually does a pretty good clean tone. Note that with a 6-watt, you will experience speaker breakup at an earlier stage, especially with humbuckers or higher output pickups.

It's true that a good clean tone is an important foundation, but some like stacking distortions as opposed to the traditional 'booster' approach. It creates more of an evil-buzzsaw kind of sound. Some people favour it(eg. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins), but it's not everyone's cup of tea. Best is still to go down and try. Who knows, you might not end up liking either amp at all!

You have the jet city? Hows the sound with
distortion? heavy or crunchy type?

Why must you go for a tube amplifier? I mean just go for a good solid state rather than get a tube amp for the novelty of owning one.

The 6-watt amp will break-up too easily, the 20-watt is too expensive, solution? Get a good solid state amp.

Well said.

But I say just for the 6 watt amp. Since you're not going to be competing with a drummer, and it's purely for bedroom practice, no harm. Davis sells them at a great price too.

Yeah, I have the Jet City JCA2112RC 20-watt combo. My Sansamp GT2 sounds great through it when it's set to clean. Low to medium-gain overdrives sound good too. The onboard distortion can do both crunchy and heavy, but it's not a modern kind of heavy where the bass is super-tight and percussive, you'll need a booster for that; it's more loose, like what you hear in Dio and Iron Maiden records.

You can find more info on it in the Jet City amps appreciation thread here, go take a look!

Specifically you need a TS-style pedal infront of the amp. Tightens up very well, plays anything from hard rock to metal. I've even gotten my JCA50H to do djent before.

Did a review of the Jet City JCA2112RC here.

Holy cow! You realy type all these?
Thanks man! Now i found a decent
review of the amp. Now that the amp
only have afew(or two? i can recall
which one he said at davis), i dont
think i cud get it by end of month. The
VHT combo left one unit. My potential
amp buyer MIA. Next stock is 3-4months
time. Now, i have to suck thumb and
wait. If not, i'll just sell off my amp head
cheap and get the JC's picovalve or the
whichever in stock first. Kinda sad man
when my buyer went missing. I oredi have
the confidence to buy it by this weekend.
Oh well... I'll wait.

The PicoValve is pretty neat 'cos of the design and the fact that it can accommodate any octal-based power tube, so EL84s, EL34s, 6L6s, 6V6s, etc are all good. Great for getting different characteristics out of the amp, but you'll have to purchase the head + cab set, unless you already have a cabinet on standby at home. Try and wait for the JCA2112RC if you can!

The JCA2112rc sounds good with stock
tubes. But my hands gonna be itchy n
will start to change better tubes. Haha!
7 tubes in total man... How much it'll
cost for the 7 tube swap. Im unsure
bout the 'bias' thing. Choosing tubes is
another brain squeezing. Getting the
right tubes. I think i'll stick with my amp
now. Till the time comes, i get the JC.
