hey guys i have this dilemma. i currently own an ibanez rg mik. now i have 2 options:

1) invest on it like buying dimarzios or duncans
2) sell it and buy a mij rg

that's around $300 upgrade either way (estimate)

love the guitar man! suits my hands..

well, do u like the feel of the guitar? does it sound good so far?
does it resonate well when playing w/o being plugged in? does it stay in tune properly (if it has a floating bridge)?

if all the answers are YES, then stick with it and upgrade.

MIK guitars are fine, just that sometimes the quality is not consistent but usually they are decent and if u are lucky u might get one just as well made as MIJs.

dude you can start off with a very simple question.

Do you like your current MIK RG?

P.S. It would be good if you make the title of this post more specific. Cheers!

guys seems like u didnt see the last line of my post. i said i love the guitar. though i'm not having any problems with the edge III, i'm thinking of having the one with the edge pro or orig edge.

both options will work well.. though most people who own MIJ guitars also upgrade their pickups...

so if you get the MIJ you may need to add another 300 in time to get pup upgrades

Though personally id just upgrade the MIK pickups...

another way to look at it is :
what is it in your current guitar that does not satisfy you ?
playability / feel ?
Tone ?
Weight ?
Prestige ?
After you have identify that, then identify if you can
upgrade or improve on it .
Then identify the cost to do that .
Sometimes, its better to skip the $300 upgrade and save
up for the $3000 one : )

Dude, personally I would just upgrade the guitar. If you sell it and buy an MIJ RG, what guarantee would you have that the stock pups are satisfactory? You might end up upgrading the pups anyway.

I did exactly that. I own an MIK RG350 I bought from way back in 1992. Along the way, I changed the pups, pots, 5 way switch and just recently I upgraded my licenced Floyd Rose to a low profile one. Currently, I'm using a PAF Pro for my neck, a Fast Track for mid and a Tone Zone for bridge. Trust me, the guitar isn't valued that much, but I love it. I love the feel and the playability is great. I have never considered selling it or trading it cos I love it too much...I have too much history with it and it serves me well.

ratboy:

1. what is it in your current guitar that does not satisfy you? -the pick-ups actually so i want to upgrade. also, the edge III bridge though really a big deal.
2. playability / feel? -love it
3. Tone? -not happy with the tone so i want pups upgrade
4. Weight? -not an issue. i guess the prestige & 20th weighs almost the same
5. Prestige? -it's a mik guitar man. of course i want mij

pujangga: that's what i'm thinking too. i believe if i buy a prestige, i would change the pups along the way. but if its the 20th then heck no! i'ma keep it stock.

ok now i see the picture 8)

if it's within your means, try someone else's RG 550/ 560/ 570 from the late '80s, just to get the feel of the neck profile (if you haven't already done so...). this IMO is the major difference, nevermind the tone.

your intended purchase/ switch here might be a good move because:

1. The 50th Ann RG is limited in quantity, any procrastinations & it's bye-bye for good...

2. If you think you're gonna go back to playing your RG350- it's a regular production model, it'll be available more readily compared to the abovementioned guitar

BTW: the 50th Ann RG is a Prestige... 8)

sub: yup i know the 20th is a prestige but for better understanding of the choices, i just stated "20th" or normal "prestige" :D

the 20th's price is way too high but is it really worth it or better compared to the regular production ones with upgraded pups? don't consider it exclusivity

that's a very wise consideration- so what if it bears an anniversary tag, yes? does it outclass everything else not in its league?

in terms of contruction QC, the ann RG should be on par with the other Prestige models. tone-wise, hearing is believing. i have not heard the ann RG in action, if it's a faithful replication of its original, the pickups should be above-average & manufactured by DiMarzio despite having no DiMarzio tags there...

I was pondering on a similar topic too..
Lets say we both change the pups of the RG550/an RG-shaped prestige and the rg350 to identical pups, wud the Difference in tone be substantial enough to justify the price difference ( $800 at least ) This would come down to the physical aspects like wood and neck.

You won’t regret going with 20th RGs, just grab one if you see them in store. You can decide later whether you want to upgrade the stock pickups or not . But you will immediately benefit from legendary wizard neck and original edge, not to mention beauty of DY or RFR. It is worth to spend extra for great hardware, good sound and well build guitar that can last for many years.
