Help! RE - Direct mount pickups, physical height of pickup

Hey there,

hope I can get some input of the more experienced guys here.

My Ibanez requires pickups to be directly mounted on. Used to have a SD JB in the bridge. I recently bought a Dimarzio Steve's Special, not noticing that being a high output pup. Hence there is excessive winding compared to the JB.

I tried to get my new Steve's Special the lowest it could get, but it still seemed a little too close to the strings..

Now thats a silly problem, I think quite a few other models of pickup have a 'taller' physical height as the Steve's Special.

Coming to think of it, the discontinued Ibanez JP was also a direct mounting unit, could it have deeper pickup 'cavities'?

Looking through some pictures on the net, interestingly the Steve's Special in the bridge of the Ibanez JP is also rather close to the strings.. Mine maybe being about 1-2mm closer compared to the Ibanez JP, based on my own judgment from the pictures I found..

Who knows the Steve's Special will sound good at such a height? I have really no clue.

My soldering iron is faulty so I can't just give it a try to hear it in action just yet.. Hope to receive some useful suggestions before I get about going through some real trouble to wire the Steve's Special in.
