Help. Line6 podxt live.

so i've got this line6 podxt live.
This is my 1st multi effect processor.
I want to get a really distorted sound without gettin that little static or feedback.
how do i do it?
is it the compressor or the gate
you see, i don think i know how to use the compressor and the gate
under , the compressor there are 2 knobs.
threshold and gain.
under the gate there are 2 knobs as well.
threshold and decay.
now i understand what they are for. BUt i do not know lik how much i should put and all.
is it the gain? the tone? drive?
because whenever i would go to jam. this disrupts everything.
i do not wanna buy this for nothin man.
i would appreciate the help.
