Hi,

First of all i hope that all experienced SOFTies would kindly give me their help! I have some questions about drum. I'm trying to pick up drum as my intrument. After making few researchs, i'm still not clear of certiain things.
1) What type of drumset should a beginner buy for home practice.
2)I'm into rock and metal genre, what type of wood of drum should i buy?
3)Double pedal. I wanna train to be those fast double pedal drummer, any recommendation of which dp to buy?
4)What type/size/brand of drumsticks should i buy for rock and metal genre?
5)I'm into mostly Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold songs, what ride, splash, china, hi-hat, cymbals should i get?

These five question is all i wanted to know. I don't mind and i most interested in logoless drumset as i'm still a student without much money. So hopefully someone can answer these 5 questions! Thank you !

1 and 2: since ur a student, a practise kit is sufficient enough. 5 piece kit costs around 550. (phillipines mahogany)

3: any cheap double pedals to start off and practise is the key. no tom dick or harry can go as fast for dbl pedalling without practise.

4: any sticks that u like

5: Sabian AAX. (not cheap)

hope this helps.

ahead sticks sells about 50 to 70 bucks... so there's no where u can get it cheaper first hand elsewhere other than DRMP.

Where can i find the drum made of phillipines mahogany? What brand of drum made of that type of wood? AAX cymbals around how much? DRMP is what?

for that part, the fun of GAS begins... singapore is so small that u can get from one end of the island by car within 30 minutes...

so it's best heading down to city hall, take up the old escalators of bras basah complex and head in ranking and swee lee to check out the items.

MinEr, this is my honest, straight as u can get, 2 cents worth.

jus 1 answer to all yr questions:
anything u can afford to get your hands on.

u said that you're a student, so i assume you have a limited budget and i assume further that this budget is in hundreds, not thousands. u didn't say how far you have gone in drumming but u did mention beginner. therefore i would say you don't need to have the best or have it all at this point. just get whatever you can afford, then as you improve, you either add on more stuff or upgrade.

do check the buy/sell ads for 2ndhand stuff. they might be used but most are still in good shape. can make your dollar stretch further. good luck, man!!

Hehs MinEr hope you don't mind me asking question here :p Thanks Alvin. Is carlos good? Erm Ranking have the website?

Errm, I think you should ask Ah Pek that question cos he is the man that help brought the brand into Singapore. I've never played them before so I think I shouldn't make any judgement based on what I've heard others say.

I don't think Ranking has a website but you can always drop by. It quite convenient....

Oh. thank you snow, marc and alvin!

My budget is 550-750.
I think i'll get a drumset and a double pedal first.
But if anyone know of places that sell cheap first hand Ahead stick please inform me! AH LI GAH TOUK!

"anything u can afford to get your hands on."

Awesome. Good one snowflier. Never thought of it that way. Makes so much sense.

ya hor... wah must sticky that quote girllll!!

"anything u can afford to get your hands on"... i feel like adding

"and not anything else u don't need"

haha u guys...

MinEr, Ahead sticks are some of the more expensive ones in the market. with your budget and current level, are you really sure u wanna splurge on those? 1 pair of Aheads can get u probably 5 pairs of Vic Firths/Tamas/Pro-Marks etc. Plus u can get different sticks and experiment with size, wood, tip. And in case you're a hard hitter and break any, you won't feel the pinch so much. I suggest leave the Ahead for later, maybe you can request it as a Christmas present. Play around with cheaper sticks for now.

with your budget, i suggest going with Alvin's suggestions or try the sell section and get anything (of cos pls check for condition..haha) around $500. leave the rest of the money for pedals and sticks plus possible drum head replacements.

oh yeah, there will prob be an End of Year sale at Swee Lee, so if there's anything u like but dun need urgently, wait til then, u might score a good deal.

If your budget is 550-750 for everything you want, it won't be enough.

But if you get a second hand Carlos (I've seen $280, not sure if there've been lower prices) and a double pedal, it'll be enough, but it won't be enough for the cymbals (Sabian AAX).

Also, I don't recommend taking up Ahead sticks that fast if you're a beginner. For one thing, Ahead sticks have a different feel compared to wood sticks, I feel you should work with wood sticks first before actually going on to Ahead. Ahead sticks are not made of wood, so the cheapest you saw ($70+) would already be the cheapest for first-hand Aheads.

Guitar 77 got Ahead $65 donno if the pirce went up. ahaha. Penin there. Gd luck . Just get a pearl forum or stagestar (but thier not in production anymore) only forum is. if not carlos 550. Tune it well. haha. get iron cobra or pearl eliminators. cymbals slipknot all paiste (white colour ) A7X is sabian if i'm not wrong. Buy Wuhan hahaha or stagg if ur on tight budget.

Thank you everyone for your kind help. Erm lepak pearl forum and stagestar is 1k+ right? Why iron cobra and elimination? They are cost quite a lot right? May i know the differents type of double pedal and what's it for?

u should do a search on "double pedals", lots of old threads discussing brands, price, feel, etc. will probably give u a better idea of what to get.

as mentioned b4, since you dun have a very big budget, consider getting cheaper double pedals. i'm not sure how much these cost but some softies have used them before, e.g. carlos so hopefully they can advise u. besides not breaking your bank, they also help to build up your leg muscles since they're not as smooth as the expensive ones (iron cobra, eliminators etc). ezimusic sells peace velocity pedals (Not nitro drive) for $200 i think. not sure how they feel tho.

u can try googling to find some international reviews as well, dun limit yourself to what u can find here.

i donno. wad i felt e most important to me currently b4 i even got my kit(am getting it on wednesday hopefully) is a metronome and e prac pad.

well diff people hav diff ways of starting. but i guess getting a kit is good too cos u can prac anything.
with tt budget i wouldn't mind getting basic entry kit and tahan awhile we stock cymbals then mayb spurge on ur doubles and cymbals HAHA!

take ur time to consider dude
