Help in drums needed!

agree with emman. even if you have a kit, both the metronome and practice pad would still be very very useful.

and i dont think you should be getting double pedals first. get the more important stuff like skins and cymbals first?

and with your budget, definitely keep those ahead sticks outta your mind first.

like a wise wise man told me on msn just today - get what you need lah, then filter out what you don't need.

so think really hard what you need for now, then the rest can slowly save for and build up.

rome wasn't built in a day!

well my honest opinion is that u dont need a drum kit at home to practise at all. for the first 3 years of my serious drumming i never had a set. Purely air-drums or jamming studios. If ur willing to spend a little more bling u could go for lessons at wherever gives them. But to me a beginner doesnt need a drum set at home. besides if and when u get good, invest in a great set. better than getting trashy and then upgrading slowly. cymbals esp will cost a bomb.. Like i think someone said, get sticks, a metronome and a practise pad first

My opinion differs greatly. I did my share of air-drumming when I first started out and although it is good enough for coordination practice and song structure learning, it doesn't help in some of the most important elements of drumming.....touch, sound, dynamics and guess what....it does nothing to your foot technique.

Of course I understand that there is budget constraints and space contraints with most beginners but this topic is not about money/space now....but rather, if having a kit is beneficial/not beneficial for beginners.

If the beginner has a drumset to start with, he/she can start to develop the right tone, dynamics and practice foot technique immediately (provided he/she has an instructor for guidance). And guess what, having a drumset can be a form of practice motivation too...so it helps out mentally too. On the contrary, if he/she air-drums and has nothing to check tone, dynamics, technique with...he or she will have to waste time rolling backwards later on to spend time on practicing these areas. Worst, the beginner may end up developing some bad technical habits....

So, it is important to have a kit immediately if possible! Or if not....hire out a studio at least twice a week to have some practice time on a real kit....you'll be glad you did....

well i guess having a kit early on is not a bad thing at all. come to think of it i remember wishing for my life that i had a drum set at home a long time ago. I simply dont see it as a necessary item to begin learning drums. Its definitely NOT not beneficial though. Get it if u can

heh heh... i look at this thread and i see myself 2 years ago.
get 2nd hand carlos basic kit, buy a change of heads, that will probably set you back maybe 400+, get a pair of second hand carlos dp around 100.
cymbals... well... try starting off with paiste 201. trust me, if you are tight on budget yet you want proper sounding cymbals, 201 is the lowest you can go, unless you want to experiment with 101.
that all in all should be around the total cost of about... 800.
are ahead sticks really important? use lazer 5B's or 5A's works like a charm IMO. $7/pair.
