h1n1 in singapore

SINGAPORE (AFP) – A 22-year-old Singaporean woman who returned from New York has tested positive for swine flu, in the city-state's first confirmed case, the Ministry of Health said.
"Singapore has confirmed its first case of influenza A(H1N1)," the ministry said in a statement.
It said the patient was being treated at a communicable disease centre and was in a stable condition.
The woman was in New York from May 14-24, returning on a Singapore Airlines flight on Tuesday, during which she developed a cough.
The ministry said all her "close contacts" will be quarantined and provided with antiviral medication.

Well, I wonder what that woman in concerned was doing in New York. If she had no official business to be there, then I feel that it might have been an unfortunate oversight on her part to proceed with her trip given all the travel advisories issued. More unfortunate would be the people who have been inconvenienced by her.

Which is why it's up to individuals to exercise discretion in postponing non-essential travel to severely affected areas.

cant blame her wat... if she have to go then she have to go... its all up to her.
she just suay tat she kena the disease.
the gahmen adviced, not stop

but her freewill (if not for official business trips) can in fact pose a potential threat to other's lives. I feel Garment should actually ban certain areas for tours or travels.

yes true, but if 1 still wanna go then nothing can be done.
only if the gahmen freeze all the flights to usa,mexico,japan...(the most hit countries)

it still gonna be hard because, many other countries are hit too... like malaysia...
so even if all flights or travels are ban, there will still be a chance of the disease goin ard.

Yes true. But percentage-wise, people who just wants to go those countries u mentioned above,to me are plain selfish. They may get well or not when come back to Singapore, but then again people around them might not be so lucky. Not everyone is lucky.

some trips are planned long before the outbreak of the swine flu, involving many agencies from Singapore and the place of destination. Its not easy cancel/postpone them, and doing so would cost the organisers , participants and the many different agencies/embassies a huge loss of $$, not to mention the organiser's reputation is at stake.

So is it really more selfish to go ahead with these important trips? i dont think so.

In retrospect , it is often easy to see that the cost of the trip outweighs the benefit. But , at the point of making the decision it is very easy to underestimate the risk, especially when the govt lowered the alert level.

If we are to ban people from going to high risk places, are we also to ban them from coming here?

BAN!!!! everything must ban.....board up our borders. close our doors. sever internet ties. cut off connection from everywhere else....ban ban ban ban ban....

~meh~

First SARS victim in Singapore was a woman, and now first H1N1 victim is also a woman. Not blaming woman here....just statistics :)
