Guitar tone help! HELP!

Hi all bros here. I have a small problem with my guitar tone. I'm using a Bc Rich Special Edition Bich Archtop. Bolt-on maple neck and basswood body with EMG 81s in the bridge and neck. I connect it to a Boss SD-1, Boss MT-2 metalzone, MXR 10-band Eq and an SX amp. My set up has sounded pretty decent all the while. I can't really show my pedal settings cos I dont have a picture but somehow my tone is getting screwed up. The treble strings sound pretty noisy and everything sounds kinda cold. My strings are D'addario 12-54 and they are quite rusty. Does anyone here know if rusty strings will cause the notes to sound noisy and is there any possibility that the cheap shit basswood body will cause the guitar's overall tone to sound really bad? Like a cheap tone? From a cheap distortion pedal?

Yes rusty strings will affect your sound, it might not vibrate properly. And basswood is not necessarily cheap and lousy, several guitarist used it alot. So you should try swapping out those strings.

OKay thanks bro. Then does anyone know if Metalzones really are that bad? I wrote about this on the ultimate-guitar forum too and one guy was telling me that the metalzone isn't really a good distortion pedal. He says it's noisy and trebly. Anyone know a replacement?

the EHX Metal Muff is one that is commonly recommended...I have a Biyang Metal End King which works great as well....both in the region of $160

i tried the metalzone before and i thought it sounded fine....not as bad as some people claim it to be.....but that was a while ago....i might change my mind if i hear it again lol

mod it,the stock MT-2 is pretty trebly and thin sounds like a bee.

Ok. . . Ummm. . . So if I send it for modding, I just tell the guy that I want a thicker tone? Or do I tell him that I want more mids out of it? But if i need more mids, I can actually just use my EQ pedal for that. And I don't know if my guitar makes the entire set up sound thin.

certainly change the strings.swap your amp for a better sounding one.it'll help the tone by alot.

It? Beez is an it? Haha. I thought his name or nickname is Beez or something. I'm sending my guitar for setting up, so maybe I'll consult him on that too. Thanks bro. And does anyone here have any views on a Bc Rich Special Edition Bich? Just curious to know. Negative/Positive comments. . . Anything at all.

hey, i suggest you don't send the stock pedals for mod so fast first. sometimes tweaking the eq in the amp, and tweaking the eq in your 10-band mxr eq pedal, apart from other things can help.

here's my suggestions:
1. change strings (a must! rusty strings make your guitar sound shrill and thin)
2. tweak your eq settings :
a. your amp settings : it's a good thing to start from 12 o'clock position
of everything (including all other effects) and go
from there. reduce the treble of your sx amp (sx
amps are shrill indeed. that's what the eq pedal is
for). another way is to boost your mid slightly.
and another alternative is actually to scoop your
mid and increase both the bass and treble to
around 4 and 3 o'clock. try what works best.
b. your mxr eq settings : either you leave your amp to all 12 o'clock
position setting and go from here(take similar step)
or use this pedal to compensate what's lacking from
the amp. tips for eq pedal : sometimes it's good to
increase one band of mid and scoop the one before
it, it thickens the sound without sounding like
motorcycle, heheh.
c. your MT-2 settings : not a bad pedal, seriously! sometimes too much
drive/gain makes the sound shrill, so use it just
enough. and the eq from the pedal shud only be for
compensating the rest.

that's about it.. (a bit long, but i really hope it helps)
trying out different things first is the key before resorting to buying things (if you want to save money, that is, heheh).

if that does not work as well, hell, buy a new amp, really.

good luck!

get a lespaul or mahogany body guitars that are heavier, it'll thicken up the tone.
thats the fastest way. or you could do what ^ just said.

is getting screwed up? had a decent sound before it? whats the difference in the two situations? the strings got rusty? then change the strings. you changed the pedals settings? change it back!

Ummm.. Many thanks to the bros here. I'll reply bit by bit.

Boyl:
Yea I'm changing my strings soon. What I do is to set my amp eq at 12 o'clock for all. I'll try and explain my pedals bit by bit.

MXR EQ: I raise the mids and reduce the highs by a bit to reduce the hiss. Gain is raised and level lowered by a bit.

Boss MT-2 Metalzone: The Level is set at around 10 o'clock. High is set at 3 and Low is set slightly more than the High. The mid is set at around 1.30 and mid frequency is turned down all the way. Distortion is at 9 o'clock

BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive: The level is somewhere near 9.30 o clock and the drive is at around 10 o clock. Tone is set at 3 o clock.

Funktastic:
I wish I could buy a new amp and guitar man. Haha. But I'm short on cash and I've actually decided to stick with this guitar since it hasn't given me any problems at all. This is the only time where something has come up.

theunknown: Had a decent sound, yea. It gave a false illusion of "good tone". But really the MT-2 was full Low, slightly lesser High, Mid at 10.30-11 o'clock and mid frequency set at 2 o'clock. It sounded pretty good for a while. But I realized it was freaking noisy and sounded like a can of bees. Haha

kerplunk182: Same issue yea. . .

niteblade: I blend the overdrive and metalzone together. But apparently, the metalzone's sound signature or tone thingy is hard to change, so there isnt much warmth in it.

White strat: Yeap, really thick strings.

But all bros who've spent a bit of their time to read this: I jammed at beatmerchants the other day and it was my first time using my new MXR 10 band EQ with my MT-2 and SD-1. I was using one of the marshall amps there and it sounded horrible. I mean the treble strings sounded bad as what I experienced at home. But the bass strings and everything. Sounded really dry. And dead. I called a friend and he said that the jamming studio's owners probably didnt change the tubes in the header, which causes the amp to sound dead. Does anyone know if this is the main reason for the bad tone?

Rusty strings... I think you know what I'm gonna say. And for your health's sake, don't use rusty strings. If you cut yourself, you might end up with blood poisoning, have to see a doctor and possibly lose your finger if you don't.

I also don't think its the basswood body. Its a very neutral wood so its very sensitive to E.Q. settings, so yeah change your strings, and work your E.Q. You could also try getting a better amplifier.

I heard the MT-2 before, its characteristically a very trebly, 'scooped'-sounding pedal and not many good tones are easily obtained. You have to experiment and really tweak it to get a good sound.
