dear friends

scale length, one of the most disputed playability factor, has an influence to a certain degree on our playing. which do you prefer/ feels more suitable to your needs?

i have grown comfortable with the 25.5' version (all Ibanez's fault), however, i feel that the longer time i spend with a certain guitar of a certain scale length, the more adaptable i become. so it doesn't quite matter any more but there's a preference for a 25.5' of course 8)

**scale length: distance from the nut to the bridge.

When I was younger, part of my guitar studies include learning 7th chords around the neck and I realize that I can't play certain chords on a 25.5' scale length guitar. Thus I kinda juz threw my Ibanez aside and play on my Les Paul alot more :p although there are still some chords I can't play on my LP cuz I physically can't reach it.... :(

I would preferably play a 25.5" guitar anytime, been using them for as long as i have been playing. Tried a LP before and it took some time before i could get used to it barely, but given ample time....I'm sure i could switch between these scale length with ease :)

PRS 25" didn't felt much diff in my hands though

Ive grown accustomed to 25.5. Thanks to fender, line6. But then, have to take into acount neck shape, thickness as well. I used to own both a fender and an epi lp at the same time. Ill play the epi for a few weeks, then when i get back to the fender ill have to take some time to get used to it again and vice versa. Ive since sold both guitars.

I guess thats why u see quite a no. of artists stick to either fender or gibson.

i like my ibanez.. although my les paul scale is good as well..
both have different sdcale lengths to enable u to do different stuff i guess...

If I had a choice: 25.0". A nice compromise. Like the feel on the PRS's and the Ibanez SZ's. 25.5" guitars are fine too. Playing with 24.75" guitars introduce a fresh change to the playing, but just doesn't feel like "home" to me. Blame it on starting guitar on a strat. The (donch know what you'd call it) spankiness/tightness(?) of 25.0" and above is important to me.

I'd wear leather pants if I wanted tightness. 8)

Any tighter you'd be playing a bass guitar.

I would be loath to play a 24.75" if there were 27 frets on 1, like the Caparison Horus/Apple Horn. With jumbo frets too. Like how do you play high up?!

i have 2 24.75" scale guitars n 2 25.5" scale guitars.... i find that scale length is not so much of a thing to adjust to compared to thickness of the neck and the fret size. Because even if you get a shorter scale guitar, if the neck is so thick (like some LP) you wun be able to stretch far on it anyway.

Short-scale 24" for me! Small hands and .10 strings work well for me on my Jaguar :) However, I'm fine with my strat, gibson annd Ibanez guitars as well. Funny thing is the inlays that take me a while to get used to when switching guitars *lol*

I can use both scales leh. 24.75 is just easier to bend cos there's less tension and it's smaller so i don't need to move my hand around so much. I just don't like the way the strings clang on the frets due to the slightly lower tension. A matter of taste.

How does the scale length affect tone? Apart from body construction, mahogany vs ash etc, there seems to be a lot of reference to the scale length, whenever people talk about Gibson vs Fender, and PRS being the in-between oddball.

There definitely is a preference for either depending on the musical style, and either will make me play slightly differently.

That said, both my guitars are 25.5. One with single coils, the other humbuckers.

I do dream of having a 24.5 sometime soon.. or maybe a 24... Gee.. The GAS.

i started with a lp copy 24.75", but my preference is definitely with a 25.5" scale

floppy strings are quite annoying to me, esp since i have quite fat fingers, and i hate having that extra vibrations against my fingers when i hold open chords....makes me sound like a noob, but maybe i am, but it does irk me

Anything between 24.75 - 25.5 (maybe even longer) is fine with me.

But the idea of playing guitars like Ibanez GIO mikro kind of feels weird.

Hmm I like 25" for feel but for tone I'll go with 25.5" or 24.625". There's just something about the frequencies of all 25" guitars I've heard from different brands and boutique shop luthiers that sounds neither here nor there.
