Almondx: It's not entirely a misconception. I own a classical guitar with a french polish, it doesn't offer the protection of poly given the approximate same thickness and french polish like nitro, continues to harden even after many months. Simple test: take a pick and strum it across a guitar top with french polish and a guitar with a thin poly finish. Which will leave a mark? Not the poly one.
Concert classical guitars naturally are not subjected to the same playing conditions as an electric guitar. Hence a french polish on a classical guitar can last pretty long and serve to be an adequate protective layer.
