Guitar Players/Pros: Guitar + AMP Combination

I play mainly punk-rock and pop-punk,mostly Green Day stuff.
I want to know what's a good guitar + amp combination to get for the stuff I want to play.
Here're a few samples for the kind of songs I want to play:

Mostly stuff like that.DaVE has covered all of them very nicely, close to,if not exactly like the original versions of these songs.

Amp-wise,I'm pretty sure I'm getting a Roland Cube, either one of the 10x,20x or 30x versions.

However, feel free to recommend me another amp that would be suitable for my purposes:
-Mainly for practise @ home
-But good enough for use in a gig

And,guitar-wise,I'm not really sure what I'm going for,if I should get a single-coil or a humbucker.Do feel free to recommend me a guitar that suits my purposes as mentioned above.

If it helps,I plan to keep it under my budget of $500 for both the guitar and amp,but I'm willing to pay extra for good quality so do also recommend combos above my budgets but just TRY to keep it under if possible.:-D

Big fan of dave here to.

Maybe get his equipment? like a Roland Cube 30x, just went down to Sweelee just now, costs 588 bucks. Over budgeting already heh, but its worth it. 30watts should be loud enough for gigging. And get a humbucker for the guitar.

If you want to know how he records, this is what he said
'' I'm using my DV camera's driver and my sound card's stereo mix function. I'm just play the background song in winamp and the driver program recording the background mp3 and my guitar playing both. ''

If you follow all his recording methods and gear, you should be able to get his tone. but technique wise, i think his almost perfect.

Good luck.

The Green Day fellow uses a old semi-beat up Les Paul Jr for recording the American Idiot album. That's where most of the songs are coming from right? I apologize for my ignorance.
Basically to paraphrase Leslie West its a a slab of wood with a microphone. A P90 pickup to be precise. And these babies are not easy to find in a guitar/amp price range of 500quid...

Ironic when those geetars where priced to be the entry level Gibson Les Pauls back in the day.

You could get a Epiphone Les Paul with it's humbuckers and just maybe roll of the tone or volume knobs abit when you go rawk powerchording. That could give you a close P90 sound. But it's no cigar bro.

Beez has some Marshall MG15s that he has modified, could cost you 300-400? I'm not very sure. Their not the best amps on their own really. But their great to start out on a budget. I've heard many stories of them breaking down, but I have played mine for years, since I started playing guitar, and besides a dodgy overdrive sound which I never use now, it has good cleans with a good guitar and a cool compression in it's tone. Could be because it sits ontop of a dead Peavey all these years that contributes to it's durability and unique cheapo yet I'm contented sound =]

So maybe that and a Epiphone Les Paul you could score for 400-500 off Soft? It's over budget but it's a very good basic to start off in your rocking journey.

It's what I did. =] No wait, I started with a crap Samick Strat copy that didnt really work and a Peavey which didn't work, period. So avoid my initial cheap crap $200 mistake and go for some good reasonable stuff.

And after your better and can get pass the built in overdrive, get a Danelectro Cool Cat. Cheap and boutique! Don't bother with a DS1...

Don't forget your guitar case, gig bag, picks, strings, string cleaner, cloth, guitar strap, strap locks, cables, tuner and 3pin plug!

Wait...so am I getting a humbucker or P-90s in this case?I know the Billie Joe Les Paul Juniors come with a P-90,but the ones that he uses that aren't his signature series come with humbuckers.Or did he change the ones that he used to P-90s too?

i second the dano coolcat drive!

anyone will do. coolcat transparent overdrive, coolcat drive, coolcat distortion. they're all awesome. but sadly, they are hard to find now!!

dude, dont need to worry so much abt whether billy joel used p90s or humbuckers or single coils. just grab a guitar u like, plug it in and play music.

what billy joel likes might not be what u like. so make sure the guitar u buy suits YOU.

Agreed! I mean if we all wanted to be like Stevie Ray Vaughan, and God knows 35% of the world's guitar players are obsessed with that, and we all got single coiled Strats and a boutique tubescreamer and a Dumble or a Vibrolux, and a loud guitar strap and a hat, we would all be like SRV.

We will all sound different. Tone is in the hands. If I played Billie Joe's (Thanks I forgotten his name) setup, I would sound like me, chicken picking... he would sound like a rock star.

However if you want his sound, for your budget, go for something as suggested above, and really adjust your sound with the gear you get. And to get there, make sure the gear you get has the potential to get you THERE. And it's getting THERE that is all the fun and learning =]

THAT said, go for a humbucker or P90 guitar. If you wanna use a single coiled Strat or something, get a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster, it has a circuitry that can alter your single coil frequencies to mimic a humbucker a little bit.

Hmmm,I still don't see what I'm supposed to go for here...a P-90 or a humbucker?Or are both of them the same, really?Anyways, what guitar would you guys recommend me to get?I'm considering a Epiphone Les Paul Standard with Alcino Humbuckers for $700+ and then a Roland 30X for $500+...sounds reasonable?I'm really going all out on the price because I'm willing to fork out more for a combo with more potential and playability.

Both P90 and humbucker at the bridge position should do the job well for u if u play punk rock. Its good to try out the guitars that some of us mentioned here, dont just stick to a particular model just becos ur idol plays one. Play the one that feels and sounds right to u :)

Agreed with the ^^^

P90 are not humbuckers. Their single coil like in construction, but give a different sound. Maybe if you hear Keith Urban on Stupid Boy or You Look Good In My Shirt, thats a good P90 sound. They cancel hum that is inherent in single coils, thus are physically different from a single coil. Thus also, they sound different.

Humbuckers are not P90s. They cancel hum because its, in basic, two magnet and coils in reverse, thus cancelling any cyclic hum out. They usually have more output thus giving you a bigger, thicker, sometimes louder sound.

But P90s can be thick like molasses. Yum.

You epi and roland choice is pretty good. Although maybe with 500 on the roland you could get a Blackheart or a Epiphone Valve Jr or a Orange. Then I will be envious.

Well once u get the Les Paul and the amp, try playing thru it and see if it sounds ok to u in terms of clean and distortion..ur ears can make that choice, then u'll know if the guitar needs to have its pickups replaced.

Most of us with Epiphones here change the pickups but its ur call.

Do you guys think I should make any adjustments to the Les Paul(change pickups etc.) or is it good enough as it is?

thats up to u to decide once u've gotten ur guitar and amp.

i dont think a pickup swop is necessary actually. i've played a couple of epis with stock pickups. they arent as bad as what most ppl say. plug it into a crappy amp, well thats another story.

but good choice on the amp though..
