Guitar PIck shapes

heelllo, seems like no threads has discussed this,
WHat Pick tip shape is suitable for what ever.

I see that many shredders use Sharp tips, my question is is it that sharp tips really speed things up? but i like rounded tips, can't shredding be achieved?

Are round tips suited for rhythm? its just that i find sharp tips have less feel to the strings(attack).

imo, sharp tips just go through the strings faster, allowing me to use less effort to pick the string. rounder tips just require more effort, thus i feel it slows me down. then again thickness plays a part in this formula. the thicker the pick, the less effort needed to run through the string...well at least thats what i feel :D

I think it depends on the player. I prefer rounded tips for pretty much anything. I can use sharp tips, but I find that I can play smoother with rounded tips, including shredding.

yeah dude same sentiments, i think sharp picks are faster becuz of the smaller surface area, but i dun like to feel of the attack can't really feel the string and sharp tips tend to have a long contact so sometimes i feel the pick gets "STUCK" on the string

oh sry let me explain, See the dunlop tortex jazz that i used is rounded while the sharp ones although same size but the playing are which is the pointed tip is longer than round ones ofcourse so u gonna have longer string release time unless u control the pick so that only the very end of the tip touches the string.

oh i see...hmmm. i think u and me: we got diff picking styles =/ i pick very lightly and i can't play fast with a rounded tip, but i love using rounded tips when playing slow with accentuated notes :D

then again i think it has to do with the angle of the tip. somehow at the v-pick webby, they mentioned abt the way the pick is angled at the tip makes a diff in the way the pick runs through the string =/

Jazz III users!!!!

I just love the feeling of picking with a Jazz III. In my hand it rips through steel and it's damn nice for riffing and galloping as well. I used to use the bigger Dunlops like the 1.0mm Lucky 13s. They were good except that it's bigger shape made my picking hand kinda tired.

I read about Jazz III picks in a GuitarOne magazine and they seemed pretty good. Headed over to get one and have stuck to it ever since.

Jazz III's are damn nice when doing sweeping as well.

Cheers! ;)

wahoo another jazz iii user!! :D btw does anywhere sell the jazz iii xl?? read abt on their webby, its supposed to be slightly bigger for more grip =/

I actually tried out the XL and I didn't quite like it. It didn't really make any difference and I felt like I was holding a bigger piece of hardened plastic.

Hmmm the last time I checked I found a couple of XL's at Daisy Rock jamming studio while I was having my lunch. I think Swee Lee got also, go check it out.

Grip wise, I think the best way to hold a Jazz III or any other pick is to have your right index finger holding really firmly to the pick at the side. This will ensure that you won't drop your pick so much.

Well as for Jazz IIIs, I always held it in a way where the Jim Dunlop and U.S.A initials are on my thumb and the Jazz III logo on the side of my index finger and sometimes the other way around. But I've been using the Jazz III logo on my thumb and the Jim Dunlop on my index as it has more grip.

Cheers! ;)

haha we seemed to have veered off topic...well, i recently ab-ed a rounded tip and a noticeably sharper tip with the same thickness and i still feel that the rounded tip really goes through the string more easily, but only it produces a sound that's as if u hit an extra string on the way to the string u wanna hit; it just doesn't catch the string to give it a picked sound :(

I use some weird pick that's almost identical to the jazz III cos i can't find it lol. I like a sharp tip once the tip has been shredded down a bit to make it rounder lol. So the area of contact is small because it was a sharp pick, but the tip is rounded after a bit of playing. Only problem is I gotta get new picks once in awhile lol.

off topic: anyone can tell me where I can get the jazz III and for what cosr? Thanks!

You can get Jazz III's anywhere man. A centrally located place would be Davis Guitar, but there are also places like Guitar Gallery, Daisy Rock and Swee Lee. It's been a while since I bought them, but I think Davis sells them at 3 for $1.80 or so if I can remember correctly.
